I'm really scared I have bladder cancer

I'm a 29-year-old woman and I've had IC symptoms for four years now, they started with what felt like an acute UTI that basically never went away with rounds of antibiotics. Frequency and urgency aren't too much of a problem unless I'm flaring badly, but bladder/urethra pain, burning and painful sex are the worst of it for me.

I haven't had a cystoscopy. My first uro didn't do one, and told me it'd go away by itself in 3-5 years. He told me I was "overthinking" my cloudy urine. I then moved abroad and tried to get on with things, having flare-ups, various antibiotics etc.

I'm now trying cimetidine and a month of cipro to rule out infection. My urogyne wants to do cystoscopy with hydrodistention, which I really don't want in case it makes things worse. I have to be able to work and support myself.

I'm so scared I have bladder cancer. I've had repeated occurrences of cloudy urine, which I read can be caused by blood. I smoked from the age of 14 to 23. If it is, I'm probably screwed at this point.

Should I have the cystoscopy? I'm scheduled for a bladder and kidney ultrasound in two weeks, maybe that would show something if it were bad. I'm really scared :(

  • Hello and welcome to the group. Sorry to hear of your ongoing problems and your doctors have not really been helping up to now.  It is unusual of someone your age to have bladder cancer, but not unknown. Ultrasounds are not ideal in identifying things in early stages, but could give an indication. A cystoscopy is really the best way of finding out what is going on in your bladder. It can be a slightly uncomfortable procedure, but rarely painful. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hi jeflsdean84

I’m a 38 year old woman and was diagnosed when I was 36, I totally understand the frustration of Dr’s telling you not to worry and you’re not in the risk group. My consultant thinks I may have had the tumor for about 2/3 years before it was diagnosed. I’m not telling you this to worry you.
I’m almost at the end of my treatment, 2 weeks left, and I’m fine. The cancer hadn’t spread outside my bladder and my prognosis is really positive.
I know it’s scary but finding out what is going on, it may not be cancer (fingers crossed it’s not), but knowing let’s you understand the what is happening and what the options are. I’ve always found the not knowing the hardest part of my treatment, as soon as I knew I could do something about it.
I hope everything works out for you.

  • Hi,Why not have the cystoscopy and find out exactly what is happening in your bladder ? It’s a quick procedure usually only a few minutes and not that painful. It would be worth having it.If you are worried about what happens during a cystoscopy we can talk you through it.I had I.C for over 30 years. How are you getting on with the Cimetidine ? I found it helped when I had bladder ulcers.I hope you find plenty of advice and support here.Love Jane

  • Please have the cystoscopy because then you will know, it is the uncertainty that is the most harrowing.

I hope it is not bladder cancer but if it is, please keep in touch with the forum. The fab people on here are so helpful and were so supportive when I found out i had BC
