Hospital Visits

Hi All. My local hospital has started allowing visitors again, although only one at a time.. By coincidence, parking fees have also been resumed. Over the last few months I have been taking my wife to work at the hospital (she has saved £64 a month on bus fares, but i have not seen any of it). Over recent weeks, the display outside A+E has shown an average of 20 minutes waiting time. Today, it was back up to 2 hours. Not sure if this is a good or bad sign.

  • Thank you to Mrs Rily and all your amazing NHS colleagues for working through this terrifying time, and thank you to all those partners transporting these crucial workers (particularly rily x) . I think it's a disgrace that anybody has to pay parking charges at hospitals in particular the underpaid NHS staff. I called my hospital this week to check out date for my next cystoscopy now overdue. Lovely booking clerk told me they are currently running at a two month delay. At least I can stop sweating on the result for another month. Love to all xx

  • I'm going to be controversial here re parking charges. As an newly retired NHS worker, I don't agree that parking should be free. Someone has to pay for the facility & all workers have to accept travel costs. Now paying a fair wage & having reasonable charges (both parking & public transport), especially for shift workers, that should be in place. I don't think parking should necessarily be free for Px either, but the arrangements do leave a lot to be desired in most places.

I've got my annual appt this Friday, will be interested to see how things are compared with previous visits.

  • There is a big variation in hospital parking charges. We were at the hospital just over 30 minutes and that cost £3.I remember one night spent in casualty with mum John & I got back to the car around 4am and that stay cost £12.At Yeovil hospital you pay for disabled parking but at some of the other hospitals we go to it’s free.Yeovil hospital seems to be 3/4 months behind with scans etc.The scan I had yesterday was due in May.Love Jane xx

  • Well we definitely agree on paying public sector workers a fair wage Teaswill. But we don't. Someone in my family works in the financial/property sector and I can tell you they leave nurses, teachers, fire fighters etc far far behind. It's like a different world. Fingers crossed for your Friday appointment. x

  • The other issue re parking is capacity. My local hospital certainly couldn't accommodate all the staff parking there anyway. It's frightening to have to take someone to A&E & not even be able to pull up & drop someone off.

  • Our local hospital has just poled and painted off the nearest quarter of the disabled parking to A&E, to create a drop-off plus drive-through area across from A&E. I think they have added some more disabled spaces lower down but not certain. Parking is still free atm [shh!] but oddly still slightly easier to find a space than it used to be pre-Covid. People used to miss appointments regularly despite allowing 40 mins to park. I don't mind moderate charges as I agree someone has to pay build and maintenance costs -  what I disagree with is letting private companies run it for profit and consequent high charges.  In theory charging also encourages the use of eco-better public transport, cycling etc but not all hospitals have good bus services. Though ours does have lots of buses stopping right outside main entrance all day and evening, I would have to change buses to get there.  Mr D has got an infected knee replacement so it's a daily trip now.

Mr D does seem to collect problems! Do give him our best wishes.

  • Many thanks, I will do. You guys being out there definitely eases the isolation of being alone in the 'new' house where due to various issues we haven't got to know as many people yet as I at least would have expected and liked.

  • Hi,I am sorry to hear that Mr D has an infected knee replacement.I do hope he feels better soon.Love & best wishes.Jane xx

  • Thank you Jane and everyone. I have just finally managed to be told the op went as planned ie remove all previous metal/plastic, clean out and fix leg straight for now. And even got a croaky but just-awake "hello" from him when I phoned as nurse put him on the phone, he's soon to be moved from recovery to high dependency unit for the night also as planned. Probably back to ward tomorrow. Cheers
