CT Scan question

I am due a CT Scan tomorrow for my annual check. I dread each one, because they always ask me to drink a litre of water so that they can see my bladder clearly.  Each time I explain (in front of the audience in the waiting room) that;

-I don't have a bladder,

-I do understand that water still helps to create a clearer picture but a litre is too great a capacity for my urostomy bag and if I drink it all I will be unable to complete the scan before I have to empty my bag.

This is usually a conversation with a receptionist who subsequently sticks to the letter of the law and says I still have to drink it all and so on......

So how do others cope with this?  Any advice would be gratefully received..

  • Hello Bob

    I drink the litre of water prior to a scan but not to distend my urostomy pouch. The main reason to to keep you hydrated so that your veins are plumped up and the medics can get a canula in your hand or arm easily for the dye to be pumped in. Usually, I void my pouch just before I get on the scanner bench.

    Yesterday I went for a blood test, was clearly cold and dehydrated so it took seven attempts to get a sample. Today I have blue pin cushions for arms.

    I may appear to be listening but in my head I'm all at sea.

  • All the best for today Bob x

    I once rang the Dr's surgery as I had a suspected UTI after a TURBT, I thought I'd explained it all quite clearly.  The receptionist said that she'd get the nurse to look at my womb Rolling eyes

  • Hi Bob,I hope the scan went well.I have had the same problem but last time I told them that the stoma bag was fit to burst & was able to empty it.Before the cystectomy it was so painful to drink any large quantity of fluid due to chronic inflammation.I also have squamous cell cancer.Can I ask what kind of symptoms you had before diagnosis ? Mine were obstructive & irritative with no visible blood.It’s hard to find much information on the rarer types of bladder cancer.Love & best wishes Jane

  • When I have a renogram I'm supposed to drink a pint & neo is always full at the end. Given that the scan has to be completed in a certain time, I was quite surprised at the last one when they said to say if I needed to empty during it. 'You're very full' I was told at the end - as if I couldn't tell that myself! As they give me a diuretic, I've learnt not to drink too much or I have to empty every half hour or so for a while.

    Ive noticed that the info letter recommends people with a stoma to bring a leg bag or night bag to allow for the extra output.
