Pre rehabilitation

Hello, I attended my first Pre rehabilitation session today at my local leisure centre to prepare me for my forthcoming lobectomy in Blackpool. After more probing and prodding I was measured, weighed, inspected and underwent a fitness test which I passed! Might be in the first team squad this weekend. I was then shown round the leisure centre including the pool, a wall that people climb up(there surely  must be a joke here) and finally the torture chamber which I was assured is the Gymnasium. It contained all manner of weird and wonderful contraptions which I am allowed to play with tomorrow. My Therapist spoke about new and exotic experiences I can look forward to including Aerobics, Yoga, Resistance Band Routines etc. I am looking forward to Toe taps and Band Squats. What on earth is a glute? Moreover, I am on a path to wellbeing. I look forward to all these therapies and exercises which are sponsored by Preston Hospital and are completely free pre and post op. I will be fitter than our butchers dog apparently. I can’t believe I am saying this but following my  GYM WORKOUT tomorrow I am going to play 9 holes of golf- weather permitting. Wow! first golf I think since August. Stay well.

  • I read that as a lobotomy at first and thought that was a bit extreme. Nevertheless, it sounds as though the NHS in your area are providing pre and post gymnasium torture in order to make the op seem trivial. If you become superfit, you may require stronger golfing bats and/or adjust your stroke to keep the ball inside the course. Best wishes for a smooth, straightforward prep, procedure and recovery.  Ray x

  • Thank you Ray, despite my tongue in cheek post I think the concept of Pre habilitation therapy is wonderful. I enjoyed my primal session today and was treated very well. Many thanks for your kind words delivered in your wonderful, dry, humorous way. Stay well.

  • I did a rehab course some years ago at the leisure centre here in Macclesfield after open heart surgery. Tested at local hospital before allowed to start the sessions then found it very useful to do with a similar group of people. Twelve weekly sessions all supervised by a specialist nurse and gym instructor. All rigged up to heart monitors it started gently and increased very gradually as my fitness improved.. Look out though, only the first 12 of my sessions were free. Moving on to second phase involved charges or you could opt for Gym membership if you just wanted to keep going after the course ended.
Oh and those glute strengthening exercises are a pain in the arris.

Good luck with the op and rehab.

  • Hi  . I'm struggling to keep up with all you are going through. Others would have thrown the towel in ages ago. The carrot of getting out and knocking a few balls about must be an incentive for you to return to full health. As always, wishing you and your lot Best Wishes going forward.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.
