Post TURP and TURBT expectations and BCG starting

Hi, wonder if anyone has experience of pain and bleeding post procedures?  My husband has non invasive bladder cancer in the bladder and prostatic urethra, a TURBT with mitomycin wash led to pain and infections and retention, once that was OK, the TURP has been successful but since then his anxiety has hit the roof and he's feeling pain in urethra, bowls etc.  He's expecting BCG infusions to start 15th Sep but last night passed a few blood clots and now is certain he's getting a blockage, even though he is weeing still.  Is this normal 3 weeks post procedure and how can I reassure him?

He's just changed anti anxiety medication as side effects of first were awful, so is sleeping better but he's a glass half empty person and I can't seem to get him to be more positive.  Does this signal disaster for BCG treatments too, are they painful?

Any advice appreciated so I don't have to sit in A&E all day again. Thank you x

  • Aw this must be so difficult for you both. Passing blood clots must be so alarming for him and like many of us his brain is going to worst case scenario. I guess you need medical opinion on the current problems. Has he a CNS nurse he could contact tomorrow ? Or do you think he should be seen today?
as far as BCG treatment is concerned I’ve learned that some people a have little or no reactions and others have some more significant issues and there is no way to tell which group you will be in  in my case I found them fine initially but now I rely heavily on lemon barley water times a hundred and pain killers for the first day  it’s a long road and has a lot of ups and downs! Would your husband join the group himself? I have found it incredibly helpful and it stops me feeling alone and as if no one understands

wishing you and your husband well as you cope  with a very difficult experience  love joyce x
