First appointment with oncology consultant

My 80 year old Dad has had what feels to us like an incredibly lengthy period of time before being told following a TURBT on 30 April that he has muscle invasive bladder cancer. (I’m not using any technical terms or acronyms yet because months later we still don’t know them as we’re still waiting for oncology consultant appointment).

after presenting to A&E last Sunday with multiple blood clots in urine, Dad was kept in hospital and had irrigation and washes done and let home on this Tuesday. While in hospital he was visited by an oncology specialist who then managed to arrange Dads oncology consultant appointment for this coming Monday.

however Dad is still having clots and blood in urine. Dad is now wondering if we should go back to A&E this morning. However we were told that he would be seen sooner by consultant if he was not an inpatient. So my question to this group is, given that we were also told that it can take two to three weeks for any treatment to being after this appointment on Monday and with the thought that bleeding and clots are going to continue until some treatment starts, are we better to try to hold off for Monday and not go to A&E today so we can at least get into the oncology system?

sorry for long and impossibly difficult to answer question but we are so desperate and lonely.

  • Hi  . Sorry to hear what Dad is going through. This is a difficult situation and one we would find hard to answer. Seeing the oncologist would bring treatment forward but if Dad is in so much discomfort he may need to be seen sooner. Could you call NHS 111 to see what they advise. In the meantime it is important for Dad to drink lots of water throughout the day to clear the debris out and prevent blockages. If he finds it hard to drink water, people recommend a touch of lemon barley in it to help get it down.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hi Rily. Thank you so much for your reply. Dad ended up asking me to take him to A&E, so that’s us back here again. Good tip about lemon barley. We’ll give it a try…I wonder does it taste nice with brandy!! ;-) and that’s just for me!!

  • Hi Jani. Hopefully the oncologist will have something positive to offer going forward. Brandy and lemon barley sounds good to me. Best wishes.
