Feeling confused

My sister has been diagnosed with bladder cancer.

She has muscle invasive bladder cancer and has been told it's deep within the wall - oncologist said localised advanced. We still don't have a treatment plan of action between bladder removal or radiotherapy/chemotherapy.

Am I correct in thinking localised advanced muscle invasive is classed as high grade, and therefore classed as aggressive?

  • Hi, welcome to the group.

Muscle invasive BC will always be grade 3, the highest and aggressive.  Yes, it is correct that long term outlook appears to be similar with either bladder removal (with or without chemo) or chemo+radiotherapy.  There are some here who have chosen one and some the other. The main concern  with either option is if lymph nodes are involved and thus potential for metastases. Your sister may well be scheduled for other test and scans to give them a more complete picture.

We are all anxious to move to treatment as soon as possible, but there isn't always the haste we think. It is important if possible to be able to weigh up the pros and cons of each treatment option in relation to one's priorities, life circumstances and so on. Sometimes fitness level and kidney function can influence which may be the better choice.

Do bear in mind that we are not medical experts, only specialists in our own route in BC!  Feel free to ask any questions or just come and chat. best wishes to you both.

  • Thank you very much for your reply, that's really helpful.

She has kidney damage and so chemotherapy is off the table unfortunately. So it will be between bladder removal or radiotherapy.

Thank you for confirming the grade and that it is an aggressive type. I did think that was the case, but it hasn't been told to us clearly and did not want incorrect information from google.

  • Welcome to the group.I hope your sister gets her treatment plan soon. There will be advice and support here for you both whatever the next step will be.Best wishes Jane
