6 weeks Chemotherapy

The next stage in my journey is 6 weeks of Mitomycin Chemotherapy.

I was told to expect a call to arrange this since my post MTD meeting on 4th February.
The problem I have is I go away on holiday on 10th April, which is now 7 weeks away, I have been desperately waiting for an appointment since 4th February. I know I just have to wait my turn but I need some advice if anyone can help.

So, I have several choices if they can't fit in my 6 weeks before I go away, which I think is unlikely now.

1, Cancel the holiday, it's insured and it was booked before the diagnosis so covered by insurance, Plus they have accepted my diagnosis without any conditions on my policy for current or future bookings.

2, The Chemotherapy can be done after I return but is that a bad idea?

3, Complete some of the visits before the holiday and the rest when I return, is this possible?

So the two questions are, can the 6 week course be split or does it need to be a continuous 6 weeks? And assuming It can't be split is waiting until I return at the end of April a bad idea for my health?

I did call the urology team last Monday to pose these questions and also made it clear I was not trying to speed things up or jump the queue, and as nice as they always are, they could not answer these questions, they just said they were surprised I had not had an appointment yet and I would have to discuss the questions when the call comes.

So, I am just hoping someone here has some advice on this as I really don't want to cancel my holiday, I really need it after the last few months but my health has to come first and if my holiday needs cancelling and an insurance claim then it will have to be.

  • Hi  . Good to know your treatment is now going ahead but with the dilemma of your holiday. The only thing I could suggest is that you need to take in to account how you may react to the treatment. Many people sail through it but others have reactions or some form of discomfort which could have an impact on your holiday. I hope you can come up with a suitable solution. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Thank you, yes, this concernes me so much but until the Chemotherapy starts I have no idea how it will impact me, I really hoped it could start well before my getaway and I would have a better idea of the impact,

The truth is, I have told my insurance every single thing so they know the risks and if I have to make a claim I am confident I am fully covered but boy do I need this break sooo much, a cancelation is really a last option right now.

  • Hi AnthonyS

The same thing happened to me in 2024

I delayed my Chemo until I got back from holiday, then I caught a cough and cold so delayed it again for a few weeks

But pleased to say it didn't affect the treatment and I am still all clear Pray

I think its a decision only you can make

Take care, much love Tina x

  • Thank you Tina, that is very reassuring to hear, did they say anything about it not being ideal delaying it or did it appear normal for them & just a case of life getting in the way?

I'm praying I get the call this week, but I have been saying that for the last three weeks.

  • Did you speak to a CNS when you rang Urology? They are usually very helpful. An admin person probably wouldn't know enough to help.

I have never had Mitomycin but the chemo I had (Gem/Cis) was organised by the oncologist rather than a  urologist. At least that was how my hospital does it.

    All the best,

  • Yes, it was one of the nurses. You have to leave a message on the answerphone, but they always call back quickly.
As I have not had an appointment yet, I think I now have to accept that it can't happen before I go away as that is now 6.5 weeks and even if they call tomorrow they are unlikely to offer an appointment that will fit that timeframe.
When they call, I will just have to discuss the implications of delaying treatment until May vs cancelling my holiday.

  • I was in a similar situation. I had booked a golfing holiday to Turkey, which I cancelled. I got a full refund both from Easyjet and the holiday organisers. Health is more important. Holidays can always wait.

Obviously, it is your decision and only you can decide what feels right for you. Nobody can make the decision for you.

  • No, they were fine about it, they said a few weeks either way should make no difference.

I will keep everything crossed for you

    Tina x

  • That is great, thank you.

  • Fantastic news, I got a call earlier and they said as long as I can start on Friday, they would fit in my 6 week course.
I have all the 6 dates in my diary, I start in 2 days and finish 3 days before my holiday.
I am so relived they have managed to squeeze this in and I won't have to cancel my getaway now.
    Thank you everyone.
