Over active bladder after cyscoscopy

I had a ciscoscopy 5 weeks ago on Christmas Eve with a stent fitted on my right flank. A CT scan two weeks prior had found possible cancer deposits restricting the flow of urine from my right kidney to my bladder. The biopsies taken showed that it was all related to my colon cancer operation 14 months earlier and I will be starting FOLFOX chemo in a weeks time.

That aside, my issue is this. Since the ciscoscopy my bladder has become over active. Initially I was visiting the toilet hourly but it has improved to between 2 and 3 hours now, but I can’t seem to increase the time of visits anymore - 2 to 3 hours seems the norm. Being mobile by day reduces the visits somewhat but overnight when trying to sleep is awful, urge to urgency quite often.

Has anybody else experienced this and how did you deal with it?
Thanks

  • Hi  . Sorry to hear you are in some discomfort following your cystoscopy. Effects usually subside after a week or so and so after 5 weeks it may be worth while checking with the medics. Do you have a CNS to call ? It is not uncommon to develop an infection after a cysto so it would be an idea to drop a sample off at your GPs to check. In the meantime, are you drinking enough water? It sounds like a contradiction but people tend to cut down on fluids thinking it may help with the frequent urination. This has an adverse effect on the bladder as the urine becomes concentrated and acidic and irritates the bladder causing the feeling of needing to go. Drinking water helps flush things out and keep the bladder fresh. It may not cut down on the visits, but it makes the pees longer and more satisfying rather than the annoying little dribbles. I hope thing s pick up for you. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • I have been using Acerola and Juniper Berry tea, atleast once a day. It does tend to flush the kidneys. This is in addition to the 2 litres of Fruit and Barley water.

  • Thanks for your response Rily. I shall try your suggestions as I have been cutting back on fluids to try and alleviate the visits. I will drink more as my present intake is about two mugs of tea and one berries infusion, with some water as well. Failing all that, I will see my GP. Thanks again.

  • Thanks Madmax. I didn’t know Fruit and Barley water was beneficial - I will give that a try. I do have a mixed berry infusion every day to try and help. Thanks for input on this.
