It is now 7 weeks since I completed my initial 6 weeks of BCG instillations and I am still getting bladder infections. Is this normal and what have other peoples’ experiences been in this regard? Thank you.

  • Hi BDB1,

Well done on completing the induction, but sorry to hear you've been getting bladder infections.

I've had 18 BCGs and it was only on number 17 that they thought I had an infection and was given antibiotics, personally I thought it was just the side effects getting worse.

I found the side effects of BCG are very similar to UTIs, urgency, pain when weeing for example. Have you had a UTI test or tests?

I drink lots of water or Lemon Barley water which I think helps ( 2 to 3 litres a Day).

I found other things can irritate my bladder, orange Juice for example, so I've given those up.

I hope things improve for you soon.

  • Many thanks for the reply, Trevor. Yes, I tested positive for an ecoli infection. I’m having a cystoscopy this week and I’m guessing there may still be some inflammation.

  • Oh okay, sorry to hear that.

My bladder gets inflammed after each BCG, it was pretty bad after my last biopsy, so much so that my next BCG instillations are going to be postponed.

I guess that's how BCG works, it attacks the bladder lining which kicks in the white blood cells to attack back.

Best of luck for your cyscopy.

    Trevor
