Cystoscopy

I am having my op on Saturday. I thought I was only having my bladder removed but when I saw the urologist yesterday he said it was a Radical cystoscopy. I was shocked to heat that my uterus, ovaries and lymph glands were also going to be removed. He said it is normal procedure for post menopause women . Has anyone else had this done? I am fit and otherwise healthy 76 year old.

  • Hi

It must have come a bit of a shock to you to hear this news so close to your operation date. I’ve had a different surgery, but it did include removing my bladder and full reproductive system-my cancer had spread over my bladder and womb amongst other things-but I know that other ladies in the group have had a radical cystectomy which involved the same as you are facing.

In post menopausal women it can reduce the potential for cancer recurrence elsewhere, and as all these “parts” are in very close proximity in our pelvis it can make sense to remove them all at the same time since we don’t need them any more in terms of needing our fertility.

Being fit and healthy should stand you in good stead for your recovery, and I hope that everything goes smoothly for you on Saturday. Recovery is not quick I have to say, but support in the initial period after discharge will be very helpful for you.
