Hi all

I was diagnosed with bladder cancer about a week ago.  I don’t really know what to say except that I am shocked and devastated.  My life seems to be up in the air and there is a great cloud of uncertainty over my head.

The urologist nurse who diagnosed my condition said that I would have to do a CT scan then followed by an TURBT, and that all this would be completed within 31 days of diagnosis.
It’s been 6 days and I’ve not received further information nor have I been contacted for the arrangements for the CT scan.  I am getting a bit worried and anxious because of the lack of communication and dates.

Is it just me being overly worried or do I need to do something to find out if they’ve forgotten me?

  • Hi  and welcome to this friendly group. I am sure you will get lots of help and support here going forward. We know how anxious the early days of uncertainty and not knowing can be. A CT scan is standard just to check nothing else is going on elsewhere and gives them a better picture of what they are dealing with. Early days yet and it is unlikely they have forgotten you. There are many backlogs owing to strikes etc. The waiting can be very stressful. You could always ring the urology dept. to check you are on the list if you are worried but 6 days is not long at all. Usually a few weeks. A TURBT is a fairly straightforward procedure. Usually done in day surgery but prepare for an overnight. Biopsies will be taken and then further few weeks waiting for results. The results will then determine the next step. I hope all goes well. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hi Winkers60

Thanks for your reply.  Yes I think it’s the uncertainty and not having a treatment plan, aggravates the worry…

Hope this will all be clear soon Pray

    best wishes, KL13

  • Hi KL13,We have all been in your position and it’s not nice but hopefully you will have a clearer picture of what’s happening soon. There is plenty of support and advice here so feel free to ask any questions. There is usually someone with the relevant experience to answer.Best wishes Jane

  • Hi,

Welcome to the group, where you will find a lot of support, so don't be affraid to ask questions, no matter how silly they may seem.

Now, it's perfectly normal to have anxiety and I'm afraid it's par for course, but try not to let it take too much of a hold. The diagnosis is alwaya a shock and initially your first thoughts are dark. However, bladder cancer has a high rate of being treated successfully and I'm an example.

CT scans are normal and are usually over in about ten minutes. The TURBT is a minor op and depending on thett time of day you have the op you probably won't need to stay overnight. Once these steps are taken your Specialists will recommend the form your treatment will take.

On diagnosis you often want to get your treatment done asap, but it will take some time, so don't get distressed and try to avoid Dr Google. If you are concerned about the dates, try calling the Hospital, or if you've been allocated a Specialist Nurse try giving them a call.

It's still early days, but there is plenty of support here and I find the Online Nurses very helpful, but above all, don't br a stranger.

It doesn't matter where you go, there you are
