Filgrastim/Zarzio side effects

I have been taking Filgrastim injections post chemo for 5 cycles.  From cycle 3 I haven't been able to tolerate more than 3 injections after chemo due to extreme bone pain, as a result my white blood cell count has dropped and one cycle of chemo has been deferred.  I am anxious not to have my final round of chemo deferred again and am at a loss as to what to do.  Has anyone else had this and found any solutions?

  • Hi  and welcome to the group. Delays in chemo owing to low blood counts is quite common. I had two delays because of this and was told it would not make much difference in the long term. I know how frustrating it can be when you just want to get it over with. I hope all goes well. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • I am on my 2nd cycle and am taking the injection for 7 days (4 down 3 to go).  When I had the injections during the 1st cycle, after 2 days I ended up in hospital due to severe pain in my spine. I was diagnosed with neutropenic sepsis, temperature and low blood pressure. I had I/v fluids and antibiotics.

When I discussed the side effects with my consultant, he prescribed oral morphine. The spine, muscle and bone pains began the day after the first injection. Whilst the oral morphine helps for approximately an hour, the pain soon returns.

I am also suffering a number of other side effects dizziness, no appetite, chronic dry mouth, difficulties swallowing, headaches, severe fatigue.

The pain prevents me from resting and sleeping- get 2 hours if I am lucky. 2 things help cocodamol and heated pack on my back.

I pray that the pain subsides once I stop the injections but then it is cycle 3 on 8th May.

  • Hello Samatundo, I am not having this therapy, but just wanted to say my heart goes out to you. I hope going forward things get easier and the pain you are suffering subsides. good luck on may 8th, take care x
