Waiting biopsy results...

My partner has had a frequent and increasingly urgent need to urinate for the best part of a year. At first he put it down to his age but as it got worse and worse he finally went to the Dr. Eventually he had a cystoscopy and they identified some spots on the one side of the bladder and a lesion they didn't look like on the other.  He had a biopsy 3 days later. That was almost 2 weeks ago. There's no news about the results but I'm worried sick. Dr Google is a terrible thing but says only 5% of bladder lesions are non cancerous so we are not expecting good news. How long should we wait for? I lost my Dad to liver cancer last year and it happened so quickly. The waiting is awful. How long is normal to wait for the results of a biopsy? I keep trying to convince myself that no news is good news!

  • Hi   and welcome to the group, although sorry to hear your dad may have bladder cancer. Firstly, be aware that bladder cancer can be treated successfully. Biopsies can take up to 2 weeks to be analysed and then there is a wait for an appointment to discuss results. The results determine the next step. There is a bit of a backlog at the moment in some places, so if dad has not heard anything after 3 weeks, then maybe an idea to give the consultant secretary a ring and give them a nudge. One thing we tell people is to avoid Google. There is a lot of misinformation and out of date stuff out there. Macmillan have produced info on diagnosis and treatment if you click HERE . Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Thanks Rily, we lost my Dad to liver cancer late last year and my partner is now being investigated for bladder cancer.  After that recent loss I'm struggling not to panic! We were originally told we'd hear something in a week but it's two now so I'm really fretting! I'm worried about the fact they found something they didn't like on two sides of the bladder. We were so focussed on my Dad and on some other things that were going on that I think my partner ignored his symptoms for quite a while.  He's a smoker and there is a family history of cancer on his side (as well as mine).

  • Hi Bethan123,Welcome to the group.Waiting for results is horrible but hopefully your partner should hear something soon.Try to keep off Google if you can, easier said than done I know.I’m very sorry about your dad.I hope you find some support and advice here.Best wishes Jane

  • Hi Bethan. I have bladder cancer and I've just finished 6 BCG treatments and I've now got to wait 8-10 weeks for my next TURBT/biopsy to see if the tumour is back. Panic and fretting will make no difference whatsoever to your partner's situation. In fact, the calmer you are, I think, the better it will be for your partner. Give the hospital a call and try and gee them up but don't get yourself in a tizzy - it won't help you or your partner.
