I am about to start BCG but after reading about the side effects of this treatment I am very worried about it.  Please be honest is this a choice I should think about before starting

  • Hi Dav,

Can't help you with the BCG but only yesterday i started my adjuvement therapy which involves being administered Pembromizulab via intravenous drip. I read all the info they sent me regarding Pembro and i have to say i was very worried. The list of side effects was very long so I can relate to your worrying.

I'm sure a few on this forum have had BCG and will be of better help than I. In the meantime i would call a oncology specialist nurse, and talk about you worries of side effects. The nurse will have some advice, i'm sure, that may calm your fears.

    Good luck ...Del.

  • Hi . I went a different route so no experience of BCG. Having read many posts on the subject here, it is pot luck. Some people sail through the treatment with no problems. Others have a hard time with it, but most are in the middle with manageable effects. Everyone is different and you cannot predict which way it will go.  I hope it goes well for you. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Thanks for the info on this realy appreciate your comments

    1. Hello Dav, yes I have had BCG immunotherapy. You go through an initial 6 treatments, which to be fair was a doddle. Not too many after effects a bit of burning on the day of treatment and maybe some painful frequency. Normally subsequent instillations can be a tad more troublesome. It really comes down to the individual's ability to tolerate the BCG. I can only speak for me, the following 3 were not too bad but as I travelled further into the treatment the symptoms lasted that bit longer. I only completed 14 instillations and had it stopped because it made my bladder too inflamed.

As far as I know it has done its job but at a cost of feeling discomfort and some frequency. But just remember I'm one person and quite possibly not the norm. Please feel free to ask any more questions.

  • Hi Dav, people who've had issues are of course on here looking for support which is what we're here for. But just to balance it my OH did not have much trouble with his 6 BCVG. Hope that helps,
