Hi, my dad who is 70 has had at least two episodes of visible blood in his urine. He told the nurse at his routine checkup who did a urine swab test for UTI, which came back clear. He then had a phone appointment with his GP, but they said they couldn’t do anything until they saw him in person, so he then had a face to face appointment and they asked him to do a urine test, which got sent away and has come back normal. I’d assumed it was a cytology test where I think they check for cancer cells, but it said MSU on the label and it had a red top. I looked online and this seems to be just to check for general things such as infection, inflammation, red blood cells, etc. I’m worried and not sure what to do as I feel like maybe he should’ve been referred for cytoscopy and MRI / CT scan to check for bladder or kidney cancer. Thanks

  • Hi and welcome to the group, although sorry to hear of your dad's concerns. GP urine tests are generally not cytology tests. Urine cytology tests need a large bottle for sample, rather than the small GP samples which look mainly for infections. Intermittent blood may not always show up in these samples. Blood in urine can be caused by a number of things, but does need further investigation. If dad's GP will not take any action, your dad needs to try and capture a sample with visible blood and take it in to the surgery. Whatever, keep persistent with GP, although I know this can be difficult. Nice guidelines say that someone of your dad's age with visible blood needs a referral to urology within 2 weeks, although we know things can be delayed under current situation. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

Hi, my dad had an ultrasound and cytoscopy, and thankfully no tumours were found. He also had a CT urogram and will have to wait for the results of that, but I assume that was carried out just to make sure nothing was missed.

  • Hi . Good to hear your dad's bladder is clear. A CT scan is fairly standard to check nothing else going on. Usually a couple of weeks wait for results. I hope all goes well. Best wishes.
