Treatment consultation tomorrow

Hi. Where do I start? I am 48 years old with 2 kids (14 years and 12 years). About a 7 weeks ago I was having really strong wee which I put down to dehydration. I then developed about 4 weeks ago itchy skin, again i just put it down to the warm weather. It was only on the 18th July that I noticed Jaundice so got bloods done on the 19th. Bilirubin levels were 250 so not good. Hospital all day on Friday 21st for a variety of tests to tell me I had Bile Duct Cancer. I then had an MRI scan on the 27th. My consultation meeting is tomorrow

I want to know the next steps as I'm hoping that they can get in there remove what they need to and give me Chemotherapy to get anything they've missed. I want them to fight for me as I'm only 48

My biggest fear is they say what I don't want them to say - that an Operation is not possible. I have a wife and 2 kids and I'm not ready to leave them

Apart from getting tired more easily (but I think that is just from lack of sleep from the stress, worry and itchy skin) I have no pain or feel any different to what I was before

I'm not expecting any reply I just needed to voice my anxiety and fear for my kids

Much love to people going through a similar situation x

  • Words fail me, but I’m pleased for you week 3 was okish and you could go out for lunch. Eating with this vile disease is truly a prob for MDO.
To date I can’t get started with Macmillan - hopefully after tomorrow we will be able to get in to a system!
As a matter of interest have you found some foods easier to digest than others?  Did your taste buds change dramatically once you started chemo?
If you don’t want to reply I totally understand.

  • Hi ARY21, the digestion has been a bit of a problem for me too as I’ve had quite a bit of pain in left side then right and after checks it seems to be digestive/gas, also a lot of belching and burping after food. I’ve been taking anti sickness tablets they gave me at chemo, even though I don’t feel sick, they said it would help with this problem and it has.

Luckily the last three days I’ve not had any problems with pain and I am really enjoying my food, I am eating loads and haven’t had any change in taste buds so far but I’ve only had two sessions. I thought let’s get out for a bit of lunch whilst I am still enjoying food. I must say I felt a little bloated afterwards but it soon subsided. Snobs1.

  • Thank you oh so much for that info… we have put anti sickness pills on the list for tomorrow. Also another thing on the list is when should  my husband have his Covid/Flu jabs, in between his sessions.
Hoping he doesn’t feel too crummy on chemo as he’s just ‘buying’ quality time. But who knows new drugs appear to be in the pipeline.

  • Hi ARY21,
They told me that I would need Covid/flu jab a couple of days before or after a chemo session but I’m not sure who gets in touch about getting these jabs, is it GP? I will have to ask next week as it’s coming up to that season where we will need it, thanks for reminding me about this.

Good luck to your husband tomorrow and I would definitely ask if you could stay to support him, he’ll feel so much better with you there, hope he feels ok afterwards. Snobs1

  • Hi there - I’m sure you’ve been on this particular website. But just in case you don’t know it.

    https://ammf.org.uk/

Also (bravely for me!) I have joined a couple of FB pages I don’t know whether you belong to them or not?
Just thought I would mention the above ..

  • With regards to excess gas, being bloated etc, I had this. They gave me Omeprazole and, just recently, Creon. Creon is additional enzymes that help break down the food. I take 4/6 tablets before I eat anything. This has definitely helped with gas and have made my stools more normal

Mightvbe worth asking about this x

  • Nirch,  you are a star. Thank you v v much for the above. I will write it on the list for tomorrow.

  • Hi ARY21,  I have joined the Facebook page Cholangiocarcinoma Support (UK & Europe) and the Patients only one. I have learnt so much from the AMMF posts on there and their videos.

I am also on Omeprazole, they put me on that in hospital. I haven’t heard of the other one Nirch mentioned, Creon, I will ask about that one, thanks for the advice. Snobs1

  • Greetings both Snobs and Nirch.
You are truly outstanding peeps. TY.
I dropped my husband off with a long list of things to ask for (thanks to you Nirch) and also to find out about having Covid/Flu jabs.
I absolutely don’t want to be nosey, but can I ask you how many bouts of chemo will you have in total. I think R is having 3 in total. But will have to wait and see. It appears to be given in 3 week cycles. 2 consecutive weeks and then a week off. Is it the same for you?
And are there any foods which you found were easy on the tummy?
As always no need to respond.
    Thankfully sun shining at last!

  • Hi ARY21, So glad to hear all went well with your husband’s first chemo session. I am on a 12 week cycle, week 1 I have Carbo/Gem, week 2 just Gem and week 3 nothing then it starts again and all in all it’s 12 weeks and then I get a scan to see if it has shrunk the tumour or stopped it growing. I’ve only had 2 sessions but so far I am feeling OK.  Hopefully more chemo if it’s working after that.

As Nirch mentioned I’m on Omeprazole also, they put me on that in hospital.
