Hello,

My dad felt poorly for a few weeks and had the typical symptoms, jaundice, dark urine pale stools and loss of appetite, he had a blood test and his ALP results were over 1000, along with elevated ggp and bilirubin.

He has had a CT scan and MRCP scan, they think it's cancer but tried to do an endoscopy today and the tumour is in a difficult place so were unable to get a biopsy or fit a stent in.

i am absolutely petrified, im early 30s and have already lost my brother and also my mum to stomach cancer.

I feel very alone and so so scared, i was hoping to speak to someone who has a story and it doesn't mean the end, i think they need to try a PCT to get a stent in to get rid of the jaundice and this is the first step but ive had no information on what stage he's at and every cancer story i've read that has jaundice means the end.

Just wondering if anyone is having treatment and able to offer something positive as i am in despair at the minute, i cant lose him too :-(

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

I'm very sorry to read that your dad has suspected cancer and I can totally understand how frightened you must be having lost your mum and brother.

Could I suggest that you speak, with his permission, to your dad's consultant so you can ask your questions about treatment, etc and to find out if he does have cancer. Hopefully once you know what you and your dad are facing things will be more manageable.

Do come back and let us know what his consultant says

  • Hi

If you click on my user name you can read my mum’s story as she navigated a secondary spread to the liver . Although not a primary it may show you some of the approaches taken to deal with cancer in that area !

Additionally a few people with bowel cancer spread to the liver with jaundice symptoms did reverse the symptoms once chemo commenced!

You have been through a lot so completely understandable that this is painful on many levels ! Hopefully they will have a good treatment plan for your dad !

  • Hi thank you so much, we took your advice and got permission from my dad, they are still so unclear, they said he has a 4cm tumour in his liver pressing on a bile duct, but it is a liver tumour.... they are not specialists by all means so i am assuming they have got this incorrect and it is infact bile duct cancer. I am hoping and praying it stays as one tumour and there's a chance for my dad. It is very scary as he is showing advanced symptoms terrible jaundice and losing so much weight, but i have to hope that the drainage today gives him strength for treatment. They said they will monitor his progress and strength and determine treatment from there x

  • HI thank you your mums story gives me hope, wow what a fighter! I am scared about my dads prognosis they are still being very vague, they said he had a tumour in his liver pressing on a bile duct, but i think they have got this wrong and it's actual bile duct cancer. The main thing is i am in touch with royal london and expressed i want him to be treated there, he is having drainage today and in hope his liver levels go down so he can have treatment. It is very scary with how much weight he's lost he looks very unwell , especially with the jaundice - just got to hope and pray for some positivity x

  • Hi

The liver is such a big organ . Some of my mum’s tumours were over 5 cm . She had hers removed at a centre of excellence where they took 73% of her liver away ! It could very well be the liver is pressing on the bile duct . It just depends on the location !

Priority is definitely to get him in a more stable position to receive his treatment !

Your doing great advocating for him !

  • Hi thank you, ive found out it is in the third section of the liver lower, thats all i know. He had the drain friday but seems to be feeling worse from it i hope this is temporary, we still havent had any idea if he can have treatment yet the hospital are being so general with the information, just really tough x

  • Hi

It is a start to get the drain going ! Must be a rough time for him though and hope he starts to feel the benefit soon !

I think the hospitals work on the priority need and that will be his most pressing clinical needs currently! It is a slow and frustrating process but hopefully he will pick up a bit !

That sounds as though it’s contained in one area in the liver !

Hope the drain is doing its job and taking pressure off his body!

Hang on in there and we are here for you ! Slowly the pieces of information will pull together !
