Recurring Infection

Hi All,

Has anyone had any experience with infections that just keep coming back? My mum was diagnosed in August 2021 and still hasn’t started chemo (Nov 2021) due to infections. They treat her with antibiotics, she’s then ok for around a week and then it comes back - this has happened three times now! She has two stents but the doctors say it isn’t them causing the infection but they don’t know what is! Seems like pulling teeth to get any diagnosis or information. If anyone has been through something similar I’d really appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks!

  • Hi

Although I don't have the experience you're looking for I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet.

It must be incredibly frustrating for all involved, but particularly you and your mum, that the cause of the infection can't be found. Also it doesn't help when you are finding it hard to get a diagnosis or information from your mum's hospital team.

Your mum should have been assigned a CNS (cancer nurse specialist) and they are usually worth their weight in gold as they act as a point of contact between your mum and her consultant. Your mum could give her CNS a call to ask any questions she might have.

It would be great if you could pop something about your mum's journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

I hope that you and your mum get the information you need soon.

  • In our case it seems the infection stems from the stents even though the medics were reluctant to acknowledge that that was the case at first. The bile duct is a hard place for antibiotics to reach so as to eliminate infection altogether but strong antibiotics can subdue infection temporarily. Hence infection / fever etc keeps flaring up when antibiotics are reduced. Meanwhile chemo can't start because of infection/antibiotics use and the bile duct cancer gets worse.. A difficult cycle to beat.
