Hello everyone
I was wondering if anyone has had a large tumour completely respond to chemoradiation?
My tumour starts mid rectum and extends into the vaginal wall and is 10cms . Its been classed as T4 N1 stage 3 I think
I am wondering if such big tumours respond to chemoradiation or whether I should expect surgery afterwards?
I am 15 days into treatment and can definitely feel like there has been some shrinking!!
Thank you in advance for any replies
Hello LM84
A warm welcome to the forum and I hope you have gained some tips and insight along the way. And well done in getting this far - more than half-way through!
There are quite a few forum members who were in a huge amount of pain from tumours that were both internal and external that literally disappeared during treatment; I can't honestly remember the size but all were amazed at the effect of the radiotherapy.
I hope very much that this is the case for you, the radiotherapy continues to work for months after the end of the 28 days and you will be very carefully checked to make sure that this happening. Very occasionally some cancer remains active and surgery is needed but it really is very early days for any plans for future surgery.
I am not a medic, any information I am sharing is just what I have learned on the forum, but over the past five years there has been quite a lot!
Hoping that the treatment is successful in every way - keeping marking off those days.
Big hug
Irene xx
Hi and welcome x
I can't comment on your situation but I can tell you about mine
I had a large tumour around my anus from the inside and protruding externally and it grew much larger from point of diagnosis to treatment starting. I never thought chemo radiation would work on such a large tumour.
However I was amazed at how quickly I responded to treatment. Within a week or so it had practically gone. To me it was like a miracle!! I had this fear that treatment wouldn't work and I must have drove my dr nuts saying itll never work and ill be unlucky yo have surgery. Mr Dr wondered why I had no faith in the treatment but for me I couldn't get my head around how treatable it would be. Im now 9 months post treatment and clear.
So please stay positive xx
Hello LM84
My anal/rectal tumour was over 10cm and totally blocked my rectum and had broke through the Propria and into the mesofascisa. I also had lymph node involvement.
It was not expected to clear, but it responded very well and totally cleared. My surgeon had a date booked for APR and was amazed when the scan results came back clear. That was August and so far it's still clear.
Anal cancer responds very well to the radiation and chemo combo, so even big tumours can be cleared. I also felt changed in the tumour after 7 days treatment. I could comfortably sit down without pain.
Also the radiation keeps working after the treatment stops, up to 6 months. Sometimes the 3 months scan can show tumour and the 6 months all clear.
Very best wishes for the remainder of your treatment.
Ally
