Hi, I’m new here, was diagnosed back in February and started treatment last Monday, thought I was doing so well all week, eating, exercising moisturising and taking so many tablets on time! Then Friday afternoon, when I thought weekend off, nausea hit! So full of gas feel like I’m huge, everything tastes weird , and feel full as soon as I eat anything! Any tips for nausea and constant burping? I’ve cut out bean/ pulses, sipping ginger/ peppermint tea and nibbling ginger biscuits!

Thanks for any advice

  • Hi

Well done on getting through your first week..

So sorry your feeling so sickly..

The sickness.. I made sure i took my anti sickness tablets soon as I woke up and throughout tge day and I stocked up on buttermilk pancakes or lemon pancakes from the supermarket.. for me those where the only thing that stopped my sickness.

I also sipped on camomile tea, lemon and ginger tea.. and peppermint tea... be careful with ginger tea though as if it's too strong it caused me to have diarrhea..I found the Ringtons tea the least harsh..

I cut out all thinks like yoghurts.. bran..coffee as that caused me wind ..

Hope you find something that settles your sickness and tummy and stay strong for your journey

    • Thanks, will try pancakes, I was only given 3 days of anti sickness tablets, perhaps I should go back and ask for more? Did you take them all the way through?

  • Hi cats mum

Welcome to the forum. Your team should be able to prescribe different anti sickness meds if the ones you have aren't cutting it. As for the gas, I had this from day one and was advised by the radiotherapists to cut veg from my diet specifically green veg, which I did and it really helped. I also found the chemo affected my taste buds although my chemo was all intravenous. I would say just eat whatever you can I lived on cheese and marmite on toast. Sending hugs. Xx

  • Hi  ,

Firstly welcome to the MacMillan Online Community although I’m really sorry to learn of your recent diagnosis.

Definitely contact your treating team about getting more anti-sickness meds prescribed. Also if you find the nausea continues even with the anti-sickness meds then ask for them to prescribe a different kind as there’s loads of them out there & sometimes it takes trying a couple of different ones until you find one that works. I hope things settle down soon.

  • Hello catsmum

A warm welcome to the forum and I am sure that you are pleased to finally be having treatment.  The side effects you are talking about (change in appetite, feeling full) all sound very familiar.  I had that all through and ended up only eating very strong flavoured food (mature cheddar on toast with mustard and onion once a day, every single day - needless to say I don't eat it now!  I was fortunate in that I didn't have wind or nausea but talk to your treating team about anything that you feel is outside your norm.  The nausea they can definitely medicate for, and there are many different types if one doesn't work.

And get a calendar and mark off the days - you will be surprised how quickly it passes.  And anything the forum can help with, just shout out.  All of us have experienced what you are going through.

  • Hi Catsmum,

I too had gas, which actually interfered with my radiation therapy one day. They kicked me off the table and told me to walk around and try to pass it. Needless to say, I was embarrassed, which the kind medical team told me was unnecessary. They blamed the gas on chemo and diet and gave me a guide how to reduce gas in the large bowel.

Basically, the guide instructed me to avoid vegetables like broccoli, onion, corn, asparagus, etc. They also said I should avoid dairy, beans, and any high fat, greasy foods and rich sauces. No carbonated drinks.

I found the most effective thing was not to eat for five hours before radiotherapy, but I'm not sure that's the best course of action since it could lead to weight loss.

    Anyway, hope this helps. Xx
