Mouth sores--advice?

I'm starting week 2 and noticed a mouth sore yesterday. Today I now have four and am not feeling that great. No fever, and I can eat (though I have zero hunger), so the care team told me to rinse with salt-and-baking-soda water several times a day. Anyone else have experience with mouth sores? What did you do? And how long did it last?

I had a 5-FU infusion last week instead of capecitabine, and I am wondering if that played a role in my current situation.

Thanks ahead of time for your advice!

  • Hi Poppydays2

I didn't have mouth sores, so can't help. I think maybe as all my chemo was via a picc line instead of oral I escaped that. I have read others on here have suffered so hopefully they will pick up on your post and be able to help. Keep counting down the days. Sending hugs. Xx

  • Hello Poppydays

I didn't have mouth sores during treatment but have had at other times and they are completely miserable, I am sorry that you have this side effect so early on in treatment.  The only thing I can suggest is Bonjela on the sores, it does sting a bit but then causes numbness for a while.

Hope you don't develop any more and those that you have heal - just sometimes we can have an extreme reaction at the beginning of treatment until the body gets used to the treatment.

    Gentle hug

    Irene xx

  • Thanks, Irene. I'll try the Bonjela, and I'm going to talk to my treating team because this kind of stinks (it's limiting what I can eat). Fingers crossed it's temporary!

  • Thanks so much, Bungle1. Hopefully, this is a blip rather than a feature. I'm going to talk with my care team later today. :)
