Hi have had CT scans MRI and colonoscopy. The surgeon thought it was rectal cancer but it's Anal cancer. I now need a pet scan and radiation and some chemo tablet. I know it's going to be hard but I was dreading surgery. I now need to wait to be reffered to new consultant.. I live in Edinburgh. Any tips
Thanks for that not sure when it will start I was kind off glad it was not surgery but reslise if it doesn't work it may be
I had a local resection as first line treatment as I was picked up very early with a stage 1 tumour that measured 2cm in diameter & 2mm deep so was viable for this surgery but clear margins were only 1mm on a tiny portion of the tumour therefore I went through a reduced course of chemoradiotherapy (23 opposed to 28 days) as ‘mop up’ treatment to lower the chance of a recurrence. The chemoradiotherapy is very effective treatment for anal cancer, it’s short & sharp but if it offers you your cure then it’s so worth it. I’m now almost 4 years cancer free & doing well.

Thank you it's just deciding if to go back to work until treatment starts it seems not likely to be able to work during
That’s a really personal decision & very individual & job dependant. I had my diagnosis then 2 weeks later had my local resection & 8 weeks later I began treatment so I didn’t get back to work before my treatment, I did return on a phased return 5 weeks after my treatment had finished although again this is different for everyone.

Hi Blackpudding and welcome to the group. I worked up until treatment started then took 4 months off, including the 28 day treatment time, mainly due to the effects of the radiation on the bowel and exhaustion. I did do bits of work from home bit could not do full time. It’s really something you need to play by ear, see how the treatment affects you, everyone reacts differently. Take it day by day. Bev.
I had an emergency colostomy on the 14th of December last year, they wanted me to have it before starting treatment which they said I would start in January so I was recovering from the op and knowing I was supposed to be starting treatment I didn’t go back to work but i was gonna go back to work but once I knew I wouldn’t be going to start treatment till Feb 21st, I did think about going back however my mind was willing but my body wasn’t, as I have a very physical job .
I start my treatment next Monday the chemo nurse and oncologist told me i will need that time off as I will be so tired, and with possible other side effect I need time off .
