So after my first visit to the MSK clinic last week, emails between my GP, the MSK clinic and me, I had a phone call today. I can't have the extracorporeal shock wave therapy. I am so disappointed. The reason is that I take Apixaban, an anti-coagulant, as I have atrial fibrillation. I have very few episodes and very seldom think about it. But apparently I am at increased risk of bruising and hematomas. I asked the physiotherapist I spoke to to talk to the department and tell them I would be prepared to skip a couple of doses, but the next call I was told they are not prepared to take the risk. So I am being referred to orthopaedics although I had been told previously that my hips aren't bad enough and my MRI showed tendinopathy and bursitis.
Anyway, I am going to carry on with the physiotherapy if I can and see what happens when I eventually get an appointment with the orthopaedic department.
But, in the meantime, to all you people there with aching hips caused by muscle and tendon damage, please follow up this extracorporeal shock wave therapy - I have had a chance to investigate and the success rates in relieving pain are in the region of 60 - 80 percent.
Sorry for being such a sourpuss!
Hi Irene75359 ,
I'm so disappointed for you! I was holding onto the hope that the extracorporeal shock wave therapy was going to offer you some relief as I’ve read good things around success rates too.
I hope your orthopaedic appointment comes through soon & they can offer a solution, it just feels like an ongoing, uphill slog to get some help doesn’t it?
I have my MRI tomorrow, in theory I’m having 2 scans as the first will look at my lumbar spine & the second both hips so I’m expecting to be there a while.
Once again I’m so sorry this didn’t work out, I know how disappointed you must be.
Nicola
Oh Irene,
My heart goes out to you.
That’s so very disappointing after the wait and the hope that this treatment would bring some relief.
It’s a shame that this wasn’t noticed when you were initially referred as I imagine that you’ve been holding out for this.
You are not by any wild stretch of the imagination being a sourpuss. You have built up hope and waited patiently for this while being in considerable pain and I had personally been hoping that this would help you.
I hope that you will get that appointment with orthopaedics very soon.
Big hug to you xx
Hi Nikki,
I’m relieved to hear that your long awaited MRI is finally going ahead tomorrow.
Let’s hope it sheds some much needed light on the causes of your pain and that it leads to a proactive treatment plan.
Everything very much crossed for finding a way forward.
Big hug xx
I had hoped to be able to give a first-hand account of what happened during the treatment and if it was effective. So I hope that others on here remember that this treatment is out there and sounds as if it may well become more accessible.
And it might well be suitable for you - please follow it up! And good luck with your scans, sounds as if you will be there some time (I fell asleep during my last one!) Please let us know what they say.
Irene xx
I can imagine that you were stunned.
To be referred for a treatment that is contra indicated by your medication and have this picked up only now is extremely disappointing.
With so much access to electronic medical records I do wonder why you have waited all this time for this to be flagged. I am truly sorry that this particular treatment won’t be available to you now despite offering compromises with your medication.
So disappointing.
xx
How disappointing for you Irene75359 I do hope your referral to orthopaedics doesn’t take too long. X
