Hi All

Hope you are all as well as you can be Slight smile

Just to update you I found my dexa scan results tonight as I was looking through my NHS app!

So at the ripe old age of 53 lol, I now have osteoporosis in my spine and osteopenia in my hip (albeit very close to dividing line of the osteoporosis territory).

My scan was done 4 weeks ago so that would have put me at 6 weeks post treatment.

I'm sending my results to my oncologist as it was a gp ordered test and I'll keep you posted as to what happens as I have been experiencing deep ache in my groin and buttocks and ache like hell for a few days after even the shortest of walks.

To say I was swimming 40 laps without stopping and hiking 20 miles at a time last year, oh and doing the Yorkshire Three Peaks, I'm finding it a bit frustrating so will ask for my pelvis to be checked on my upcoming MRI and I'm also going to ask for a referral to late effects clinic!

Will keep you posted

  •   I will be following this! I am 49 and never had any issues - also fit like you snd noticed lower back ache after sleeping just 4 weeks into trestment. I am.asking my consultant today if I can start taking anything for bone health. Thanks for sharing, Willow x

  • Hello

I am so sorry you have had this news, it is a bit of a double-edged sword in finding this out and I can understand how you are feeling.  However, with this knowledge you certainly can escalate for more treatment and the late effects clinic sounds like an excellent idea.  And I don't know if you are taking any medication yet but it would be an idea to see your GP as soon as you can; there are certainly supplements that can really slow down any progression of the osteoporosis and osteopenia.

Please come back and let us know how you get on.

  • Hmm so I'm not sure if I will get anywhere with this .. scan results added to hospital file but I was told this is age and wear and tear and early menopause related ..... pelvic area will be reviewed during mri as per the normal process….. I feel like I've been through the wringer in more ways than one these last few months and I guess 'clinical' reasonings don't bring any comfort … have a telephone call with GP in 2 weeks … whilst I'm eternally grateful for the life saving care the day to day current realities of my life can be a little hard to swallow .....

  • Hi  , I’m sorry that you’re having to deal with this right now! The struggle is real isn’t it? &   has worded it perfectly, it really is a double edged sword finding out the results of the tests although my take on it is that once you know why the pain is there then you can gain access to help in dealing with it.

Thank you for sharing this information & please keep us posted on how things progress once your oncologist has seen your results.

  • Hi Becky

This is very interesting to me as I’ve had progressively worsening hip and pelvic pain since the end of treatment, 14 months ago  I did have some hip pain before my cancer but nothing compared to this

Its got to the point now where my whole right leg aches, groin and buttock  I get general pelvic pain too  The orthopaedic dr said I have impingement of the joint and arthritis  An mri showed arthritis in my spine

Did your gp suggest the dexa scan for any specific reason apart from the pain? I’m hoping to get a referral to the late effects clinic.
    Good luck with everything x

  • Hi

I just asked for one lol! Mentioned I’d gone into early menopause and my concerns and my gp (woman) said right let’s get it checked out!
