Nail health during treatment

Hi, I'm waiting for treatment to start for stage 4 AC and I'm looking for advice about nail health.  For years I've been having gel nails at the salon every 3 weeks and would like to continue as my own nails are very weak. I know it sounds a bit vain but I'm trying to keep positive and looking good helps lift my spirits.

I'm due to have them done again on Friday so wondering if I should have them removed and just manage with normal nail varnish?

  • Hi

Personally i would avoid, gel nails are an infection risk and you don't want to get any infections during treatment. Xx

  • Thanks Bungle I think I'd be safer getting them removed then.

  • I found my own nails were pretty awful once I had the gel polish removed (not full gel nails) so had the beautician do a manicure treatment, but just ended with a bit of clear nail conditioner, which stopped my nails splitting, and that was easy to maintain myself. Actually quite therapeutic rubbing hand cream and cuticle oil in whilst I was watching TV during treatment.  x

  • Hi Mrs Vanilla,  thanks for your advice.  Mine are also just gel polish but my own nails are very weak and break easily. I will ask my beautician if she can suggest an alternative to gels. X

  • Yes, mine were too but beautician did a lovely job and used a conditioning top coat made by the same people who did the polish (OPI?) which seemed to protect them and stopped them splitting, and in the end my nails really benefitted from the break away from polish. Good luck. Your beautician will know what to do for the best.
