Pain after radiation and chemotherapy

Hi everyone

I finished my treatment and was given the all clear back in June and apart from a few toilet issues everything was fine until January.  I have real problems sitting, I am only comfortable when standing or laying down as the pain in my pelvic area is really painful. I currently work full time and although office based, I can work from home. I’m 52 and have 4 teenage and almost grown up children. A friend suggested that maybe, due to the radiation I had, that the pain might never go away and it might of caused permanent damage as even anti inflammatory medications are not working. Has anyone else had this issue? I can’t see how I can carry on with my job on a daily basis full time at the moment and have been on sick leave for the past two weeks.

  • I forgot to mention that I went for a smear test a few months ago and they were unable to do it due to the amount of scar tissue I had, I’m just wondering if I have the same in the pelvic area and this is causing the pain every time I sit or try to stand up.

  • Hello

I am so sorry that you have developed these problems.  I am assuming that if you have been given anti-inflammatory medication that your actual bone structure has been checked to make sure everything is ok there?  I have problems sitting but mine are due to extreme sensitivity and thin skin.  What has really helped me is having a selection of honeycomb cushions around the house, I even have one in the car, these are widely available and on Amazon too https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audasi-Gel-Seat-Cushion/dp/B0C8NC6D23/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?

Although I am not entirely comfortable they help enormously and I can sit for long periods.  I carry an extra one in the car so I can even take one into a restaurant or a bar.

It must be such a worry for you with full-time work and I do hope you get to the root of this.  Please let us know how you get on.

  • Hi  , firstly I’m really sorry to hear you’re struggling at the moment after initially recovering well, I’ve had late onset issues that I suspect are down to the radiotherapy & I’m awaiting an MRI on my lower spine & x-rays on my hips.

If your Dr can’t explain your pain then don’t wait as long as I have as mine has just escalated, ask if it can be investigated further, if this pain is so debilitating that you’re having to go sick from work then insist you want every avenue checking. This could be scans, X-rays etc. My GP’s have been throwing medication at me & I’ve had cortisone injections, I’ve a physiotherapy program, I’ve been on a strength & balance course off my own back but to no avail so I stood my ground & insisted it be investigated further.

I hope you get the help you need soon & things improve for you.

    Nicola
