I am almost at the end of a 28 day course of radiochemotherapy for anal cancer - 3 days to go! I had one infusion on day one and have been taking 6 Capecitabine tablets every day. I was wondering how soon if it will be ok to have my hair coloured ?

  • Hello

Well done - only three days left - you will be so relieved when you don't have the daily trek to the hospital!

Apparently Capecitabine can cause scalp sensitivity.  I wasn't affected at all, but we are all different, so this isn't advice to go and get your hair done.  I am not an expert at all so I honestly don't know.  It would probably be a good idea to ask the oncologist who should have a much better idea of when it is safe.

The best of luck, I really hope you get what you want!

  • Hi

I finished my treatment 6/11/24 and got my highlights done in the december basically as soon as i could get an appointment. It is probably best to check with the oncologist though. X

  • Hi  , firstly a huge well done on almost completing your treatment, I found it a strange feeling to begin with not attending those daily hospital appointments but was also really relieved that I didn’t have to get up & ready to go each day & if my recovery dictated staying in bed or lying on the sofa all day then that’s exactly what I did.

My hair was pretty frazzled by the end of my treatment, I didn’t lose much but it did go quite dry so I got a couple of good cuts before I had it coloured again (I go lighter which I think is a little easier to wait out than if you’re needing to go darker). Any decent hairdresser will be able to advise you how long is best to wait.

  • Hello RosieC

I put a natural hair colour (chemical free) the night before my last day of treatment as I didnt want to ring the bell with a grey badger stripe! Somehow my sister and I managed to do it even with the issues that treatment brings.

Hope this helps i would speak to your oncologist about a chemical dye though.

  • You can get the non-chemical hair colours etc., from Holland & Barrett’s I think.
