Hi

I’m halfway through treatment chemo & radiotherapy, I’m starting to get sore on the bum , what creams can you recommend & also pads as have started getting some leakage. but find some pads uncomfortable .
thanks

Xx

  • Hi Kerrie,

If you are in the middle of treatment, I would talk to the radiotherapists who are treating you to make sure you get something really effective. They will probably want to have a look to decide what to give you, but that way it will be the right product, depending on why you are sore and whether there are any open wounds or whatever.

Some of the moisturisers you can buy over the counter are not suitable for use during radiotherapy so if you want to use anything else, I would mention that too.

I think I used maternity pads as they were really absorbent but yeh, they were a bit bulky. I think period pants might be quite good, although I haven't tried them myself, but they look quite smooth and close fitting.

  • Hi Kerrie

Well done 1/2 way through. I used to have nightly Epsom salt baths and then used flamogel from radiotherapy team and lots of general body moisturiser. I did mention soreness to my cancer team and the radiotherapy team then had a look and gave me the right cream. All embarrassment at this stage had left the building! As I got to the end of the treatment i was then given another type of cream. So I would advise talking to the radiotherapy team next time you are in as they will ensure you have the right cream. Regarding leaking I remember that well and period pants were a game changer for me! You can buy them off amazon and m &s sites. They actually feel like normal big knickers and made me feel really confident.

Good luck for your remaining treatment.

  • Hello

You have had some good advice, and I would just add that I used disposable incontinence sheets (from Amazon) on the base sheet on my bed - towards the end of treatment I would get home and take everything off and go to bed.  I had diarrhoea all during treatment and the last thing I wanted was to change sheets in the middle of the night - I never did have an accident but felt that bit safer.  And I wore incontinence briefs to and from sessions too, although at the end they hurt too.  Period pants sound a good compromise.

  • Thank you . I have been putting a towel down but will have a look at getting some . Blush

  • Hi

I used the flamigel that the hospital gave me..they also gave me instagel..which numbs it but it initially stings..

I also used the aveeno cream.. the unscented one..

I do hope you get some relief soon

  • Hi  I had flamigel, instillagel, flaminal hydro and forte all provided by the hospital. As  has said the instillagel does sting initially but then everything goes numb. I used sanitary pads when needed but towards the end the hospital provided me with nappies to get to and from as it was bad. When at home i would be commando if poss just had bath towels everywhere. •  Hi  , definitely speak with your radiotherapy team, mine were great at prescribing creams, they’ll also be able to speak with your oncologist if they think you need something more.

Regarding pads maybe try something more aimed towards bladder leakage rather than pant liners, I found pant liners quite thin & a little rough but the pads aimed at bladder leakage although a bit thicker were generally softer, period pants & incontinence pants are also a good option.

BTW halfway through already, well done!
