Scared of reoccurrence

Hi

Hi I’m new here but have been through the treatment for T2N2 anal cancer. Chemo Radio x 28 over 6 weeks.

My 3 month scan was clear and also my 6 month scan  was too. I’ve had to wait 6 months for my next scan and I get the results on the 16th Jan.

I’m really worried as my lymph nodes are enlarged and uncomfortable on either side of my groin and also in my right arm pit.
I know I just need to wait for the results of the CT & MRI but I’m really struggling & can’t sleep. I know that enlarged lymph nodes in the groin can indicate a reoccurrence. Has anyone had a reoccurrence?

Were the symptoms similar to what I’m experiencing.
thanks x

  • Hello

This must be such a worry for you, and of course, as we all know, with a cancer background, we are all on high alert for recurrence.

But if I cast my mind back to when I was a child, if I was unwell, one of the first things the doctor would do was check my 'glands'.  Enlarged lymph nodes may well be that you are fighting some sort of infection, maybe 'flu or a cold and not necessarily a reoccurrence.  However, I am not a medic and I am so sorry that you have this hanging over you, I am not surprised you are having such difficulty in sleeping.

Otherwise I'm afraid I don't have experience I can share and perhaps other forum members can help.  In the meantime I am keeping everything crossed that your scans are just fine.  Please let us know how you get on.

    Big hug

    Irene xx

  • Hi Irene

Thank you for your reply. Yes hopefully it’s something else as I’ve felt quite run down and tired.

I’ll find out next week so I’ll update on here x

  • Hello Marie73,

Im sorry that you’re struggling with sleep and completely understand the anxiety and fear of reoccurrence when things don’t feel quite right physically. Having been through cancer certainly makes us more aware of physical changes.

Waiting for scan results is always a worrying time too.

It’s just a thought, but it might be worth asking your gp for blood tests as this would show if your body is fighting infection? As Irene says, lymph glands do get enlarged when this is the case. Hopefully you have a supportive gp who would wish to help.

Very much hoping that your scans are clear.

    Sending hugs xx

  • Hi Peb24

Thanks for your reply.  I’m there next week so will ask them  x

  • Hin ,

I'm really sorry to hear you’re struggling at the minute. I think we can all appreciate the way you’re feeling. As the other ladies have said the legacy that a cancer diagnosis leaves behind is sometimes really difficult to live with, we’re aware of changes that we probably wouldn’t have been before.

I’d maybe contact either your treating team or GP to get checked out, it’s not worth another 10 days of feeling the way you are until your appointment comes around. It’s hopefully something as simple as a viral reaction & there’ll be nothing to worry about.

Please let us know how you get on.

    Nicola
