APR surgery

Hi everyone

I'm not a newby, I've been lurking in the background and made a couple of posts. But now I need some information.

I've been through the chemoradiation, finished that last February, my first MRI scan was clear, but my 2nd showed "an area of concern" which was 1cm . Roll on the months , with more scans, biopsy, tests and 21 appointments at a hospital which is a 2 hour drive from home, the area of concern is now 6cm and I'm having an APR operation on the 19th December.  The operation includes a reconstruction of my vagina,  that has to go as the tumour has grown into it.

I spoke to the plastic surgeon yesterday and she told me the whole operation will take at least 12-15 hours! I was gobsmacked as you can imagine, I doubled down on it and asked her can I even survive an operation that long and she said yes of course I could.

Has anyone else had this operation and can anyone confirm that this operation will take that long??

It's just hard to believe!

Many thanks

  • Hi Jeenie

I’m sorry that I’m not posting with any personal experience of your situation but from what I’ve just looked up it is that kind of timeframe for the complex surgery you describe. I should imagine it’s broken down into sections, different areas, different teams and that they are incredibly experienced in these kinds of procedures.
I can’t begin to imagine how this must feel and I just wanted to send you the biggest hug. Do you have a Maggies Centre located at your hospital? They provide wonderful support and might be able to put you in touch with someone who has had a similar experience. Also the MacMillan phone line perhaps?

The Maggies national number is 0300 123 1801 they could direct you to your local centre.

    In my thoughts

  • Jeenie,

I too have no knowledge or experience of APR other than what I have read here, but there are definitely people on this forum who have undergone this procedure, so hopefully they will see your post and be able to help you.

    All the best, xxx

  • Thank you Bekym

Yes there is a Maggies in the hospital, I could try them but I'm not very good at talking about it all, it's easier to be a keyboard warrior, nobody can see you cry behind the screen!

I have left a message with my specialist nurse at the hospital, it could take a couple of days before I get a reply, she's always very helpful .

    Thanks once again.

  • Thank you Mrs Vanilla for replying, very kind of you.

  • I totally get that  .. don’t forget there is the MacMillan helpline .. I know it’s hard to get the words out but they know exactly what to say or they just simply listen and believe me when I say I have cried and snotted on several occasions, they were wonderful. They are on until 8pm

Message me if you want to too, I can’t help much but you will always have my ear Heart

  • Hello Jennie2001,

I don’t have any personal experience but I’m sure that you will have some responses and helpful information from those who have undergone APR. There have been some really informative posts on the site.

I also wanted to say how sorry I am that you are having to go through this. Your appointment schedule sounds exhausting, even without having to psychologically and emotionally process the return of the tumour. That is certainly a very long surgery time. I  imagine as this is highly specialised it’s important that it’s carried out with great precision and care.

Really want to wish you all the best for the procedure.

    Sending hugs x

  • I meant Jeenie - apologies…

  • Thanks PEB24

Thanks for your kind words, I never imagined I would be in this situation.

    Sending hugs

  • Hello

I haven't had this operation and have no real medical knowledge but the only comment I would make, which I am sure is accurate, if you weren't fit enough to undergo this (which is undoubtedly major surgery) I doubt that they would even consider it.  But it seems that you are definitely a candidate and I am just so sorry you went through all the treatment and had such an extremely disappointing outcome.

There are others on here and I hope that they will catch this post and give you the voice of experience and most importantly reassurance that there is life, and a good one, after an APR.

    Sending a huge hug Jeenie

    Irene xx

  • Aww thank you Irene,  thank you for your kind words. I just can't believe an operation can last that long!

    Hugs xxx
