3 month post treatment

Hi Everyone

I should have had my 3 month scan last Friday but the machine had broken down so that will now be on 3 July. I thought I was ok but lately my stomach has been feeling like I've ate loads of rotten fruit and it's fermenting inside. The gas/wind has got worse and I seem to be having 'accidents' when passing wind. I'm having to be extra careful as im now back in work. Has anyone else had this?

Look forward to hearing from work

Thanks

  • Hi,

That is so disappointing for you - the waiting is so stressful and having a delay is just adding to it. However, not long to go now and it sounds as though you are doing well. It can take a while for things to settle completely and even now (four years post treatment) yes, I can still have those 'accidents' you mention, usually to do with what I've eaten.

You might want to check your diet in case you have changed anything, although I'm sure you've thought of that; also quite a few people here have mentioned the FODMAP diet which excludes some of the foods which can be a bit harsh on the stomach for people with AC.

From the way you describe things have gone, could you be affected by stress? Sorry, not trying to dismiss things lightly at all but when I am anxious or stressed it always shows up in my stomach!

If things haven't settled soon, you might want to mention it to medical team just to reassure yourself. All the best with your scan and please let us know how you get on.

    xx

  • Thank you so much for getting back.  I will have to try and watch what I eat. I have IBS also and prior to getting this diagnosed,  I thought it was a bad flare up of IBS. That too can be brought on by stress and diet

  • Hi JG29,

Im so sorry that your 3 month scan has been postponed. That’s very frustrating and such an anxious time waiting and not knowing. I feel for you.

I finished treatment in November 24 and went back to work in January. I well remember the stress of having really unpredictable bowels and gas at this time and the horrors of trying to manage it in the workplace. I had to continue to have a really low fibre diet at that time and didn’t dare eat at work.

I did try the Fodmap diet and it helped.

What I want to say is that this settled down by March and I was able to eat more ‘ normally’ again. It is still quite early days for you so hang on in there.

    xx

  • Thank you for the reassurance.  I was never able to eat at work with IBS as when you are sat at a desk all day with stomach cramps it doesn't work so that doesn't bother me too much. It can be so unpredictable when you need to go to the toilet and the gas , well I have to try and hold that in (not ideal). I'm going to have to look at changing my diet. Hope you're ok now xx

  • Hi  , I’m sorry that your scan had to be cancelled, disappointing & stress inducing I’m sure!

As someone that’s experienced IBS prior to treatment the treatment that we’ve had can cause sporadic onsets of very similar symptoms. I ended up keeping a food diary to try & eliminate foodstuffs that kicked off an episode. This did have some variation. I no longer tolerate coffee very well & foods high in sugar, I’ve never been great with bread & from a health standpoint I try to avoid highly processed foods. I still get unexplained episodes of bloating & gas but as you’ll know with IBS this happens. I keep a supply of charcoal tablets & peppermint tea in.

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

    Nicola

    • Thank you Nicola.  The hospital gave me a large supply of peppermint capsules. I need to get into the habit of taking them regularly.  Xx
  • Hello JG29

Gosh, that's all you need to happen when having your first scan, as if the waiting for it in the first place isn't bad enough.  I am really sorry this happened to you.

In the early months after treatment ended I had a lot of wind, and 'follow through' with mucous and some stool especially first thing in the morning.  I took to wearing extra-long pantyliners all the time, but those symptoms did get much better.

I didn't modify my diet but that said, it was pretty bland anyway, my tastebuds changed after treatment.

And aren't you doing well being back at work, it is still very early days for you following treatment so remember to have plenty of rest time!

  • Hi Irene

Work have been brilliant with me. I hope everything gets better soon as it can be quite unpredictable
