I've just completed my first week of treatment (yippee!). The chemo tablet haven’t been so bad to take and I haven’t felt any nausea or sickness yet. I have radiation therapy every day at 19:00. After my session, I come straight home, apply all the creams recommended by the doctor, have dinner, take more chemo tablets, and then head to bed.
I'm currently taking Zaldiar (tramadol/paracetamol) and ibuprofen to manage the pain and although I do feel very sleepy on these tablets, they do get rid of the pain.
I do have one concern at the moment. I've never been very regular but I am getting slightly worried as I haven’t been able to go to the toilet for a few days. This is concerning, especially since I was admitted to the hospital last week due to constipation. They were worried that the tumor had grown and caused a blockage. Luckily it hadn’t, they gave me some Movical sachets to drink, and they started working after a few hours. However, despite regularly taking the sachets since I’ve been home, I’m still not going to the toilet. I really don't want to end up in the hospital again. I’m drinking loads of fluids and eating kiwi”s… it’s so annoying ♀️
Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Mix
Hi Mix,
I don't have any recommendations for regularity yet (although I am sure I will have some in the upcoming weeks!). I just wanted to say that I'm glad you've come through the first week relatively well (with the exception of constipation, of course). I've been thinking of you. Xx
Hey Mix
I would definitely notify your treatment team asap - they can also prescribe you stool softeners and review your pain medication - as that might be contributing to your constipation.
Make sure you are also staying hydrated.... And hopefully your treatment team can help because you really don't want to suffer with constipation throughout treatment...
Best of luck
Ali x
Hello Mix
Well done, a week down - mark it off on your calendar!
I am sorry that you are suffering from constipation again, I would be really surprised (but I am not a medic) if the tumour is causing a blockage in a week. All I can suggest is having lots of hot drinks including tea and coffee (the caffeine stimulates the bowels). You can take Movicol three times a day safely, so if you are having less now sounds the time to increase the dose.
Other than that I tell your treating team, at the hospital tomorrow. I will keep every crossed that you don't end up in hospital again.
Please let us know how you get on.
Irene xx
Hi Mix,
Great that you’ve completed the first week of your treatment. It’s very satisfying to start crossing the days off. Also good that you haven’t had nausea or sickness as this can be worse at the beginning.
As for the constipation I can understand that it’s the last thing you want right now but good that it was checked out more thoroughly at the hospital.
With the Movicol I was prescribed 2 x sachets twice daily so not sure how many you have been advised to take? The consultant then changed this to ducosate which was more helpful so it’s possible that something else will work better for you.
Definitely mention it to your team tomorrow as sounds like you are doing all the right things.
Wishing you well for your treatment journey in the weeks ahead x
Hi Mix ,
I suffered major constipation during & after my treatment although I do wonder how much was real constipation & what was internal inflammation, anyhow I took Movicol or Laxido every day, sometimes one sachet wasn’t enough & I was told I could take more if needed so ask your Dr about increasing your Movicol. You could also try adding some flaxseeds to your diet in either their natural form or ground, I often still use ground flaxseeds adding them to my porridge in the morning.
I hope you find something that works for you soon.
Nicola
