Post treatment side effects

Hi everyone, it's been exactly a year to the day post treatment for me, where I had combined Chemo and Radiotherapy and my six month scan following treatment has shown that the treatment worked and my tumour has gone. My question is as anyone had pain in their coccyx (tail bone) post treatment? Mine started about 3 months ago and would start to hurt after sitting for long periods, I'm back at work and office based so sitting is inevitable for me, however it's gradually got worse and it's now their constantly whilst sitting. I've contacted my GP who gave me a telephone consultation and said it could radiotherapy side effects, but didn't examine me and just offered morphine which I declined. From previous experience I wouldn't be able to function in my work whilst taking this and I'm struggling with my mental health since treatment and my work is something that keeps me going, I don't want to take any time off especially as the GPs suggestion of morphine isn't treating the source of the pain just trying to mask it so it won't go away. Has anyone else experienced similar side effects, did they get better on their own or do I need to be pushing for some support from somewhere?

  • Hello KezC

I am really shocked that with your history your GP was so casual in his treatment of you.  A telephone appointment resulting in a morphine prescription?  No wonder you don't want to take it.  I am so sorry that you are still struggling mentally too, and I can completely understand you immersing yourself in work.

When is your next appointment with your treating team?  Do you still have a number to contact them with any concerns?  Not that I think that it is cancer related at all, but they may be able to shed more light on the situation than your GP.  I have hip pain, not coccyx pain and to date, I have had physiotherapy, a Dexa scan and an xray of my hips to find out what is going on.  Also, these investigations are as a result of me visiting my GP, I was told that in light of my history I had a very low threshold for referral.

I would push for more investigation, unfortunately it could well be a side effect of treatment but morphine isn't a long term painkiller should you need medication.

Please let us know how you get on, I am wishing you the lots of luck in getting this treated properly.

    Big hug

    Irene xx

  • Hi KezC,

I was interested to read your post as I seem to have developed pain in this area just in the last week.

I am sorry that you are experiencing this and absolutely agree with Irene in that it’s disappointing that your GP felt that a phone consultation and prescribing morphine was adequate without proper review and investigation. I hope you are able to access more help as it must be difficult to manage.

My chemo radiation finished mid November and I’m waiting for results of first scan. The pain has come out of nowhere and sounds similar to yours so am now wondering if it could be related to the radiotherapy.

I’m sorry that I can’t offer any helpful advice at the moment as I’m unsure what to do myself but just wanted to wish you well in accessing help. x

  • Hi KezC

This isnt something I've experienced but agree with Irene and Peb about your GP. I would contact your hospital team for some answers. Can you ask your work for a standing desk ? Is it just when sitting at work or sitting fullstop, if just at work maybe a different chair would help you've probably already thought of that. I'm not much help. Sending hugs. X

  • Hi  ,

Yes I too had coccyx pain post treatment. Mine has resolved although like many I still have some hip pain, bilateral sciatica & some lower back pain all of which have improved somewhat with physiotherapy. I mentioned to my oncologist about my coccyx & hip pain at one of my review appointments & he checked my most recent scans as he said your coccyx can fracture due to the radiotherapy so it would be worth mentioning it at your next appointment or if you can’t wait til then I would give your oncologist a call to see if he’ll review your latest scan.

Can I just add my heartfelt congratulations on the brilliant news of your full response to your treatment.

    Nicola
