Sore bleeding lips

Hello all. I finished my treatment on the 24th of January! I now have among other things very sore, blistered lips which my dr says is from the chemo. I have been using a couple of different lip balms, Vaseline and Blisteze but nothing is helping. They are bleeding at times. I wondered if anyone had any advice or experience of this?

Thanks x

  • Hi Clarhedge

Well done on completing your treatment, I hope you are doing OK.  I didn't have any issues with blistered lips, but I do get dry lips and use burts bees lip balm which I think is brilliant, occasionally I use a thing called nudestix lip butter which is really moisturising but it's expensive hence I only use occasionally. You could try coconut oil MrsBadass used it on her skin during her treatment and said her skin held up well. Hope you get some relief soon. Sending hugs. Xx

  • Hi  ,

Congratulations on completing your treatment, now the healing begins!

I’m another advocate for Burts Bees lip balm, I try & keep my beauty regime as clean as possible & love the ‘Wild’ products, my daughter put the lip balm in my Christmas stocking & it’s great, it doesn’t just soak in or slide off like many but sits on your lips & has real longevity. I can’t quite remember what it was about vaseline lip balms that my daughter told me but I know they’re a bit rubbish on the whole.

I hope the road to recovery is a smooth one for you.

  • Hello Clarhedge

Well done on completing, you must be so relieved that is all over!

I am sorry to hear you have such sore lips, it wasn't something I experienced.  However, I am a lip balm addict and I would agree with the others, Burts Bees is excellent.  And the Cancer Research website recommends Moogoo although I haven't tried it.

To have your lips bleeding is really rough and I hope you find something that suits and helps.

  • Hello Clahedge,

Well done on completing your treatment! So sorry you have this added issue.

I swear by Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream, it's actually amazing, it has many uses and dry and cracked lips is one of them. I sued it all throughout my treatment and before.

Good luck hope they ease soon.

  • Thanks all. I have used the burts bees lip balm today which has been good though the blisters are still there. Moo goo is also good at moisturising but nothing is actually healing my lips.
I might have to ask my gp if they can suggest anything? I’ve never had a cold sore so I don’t think it’s that.

  • Hi

Probably worth speaking to your gp, but I'd give burts bees a little bit of time, I'm not a doctor but due to the treatment we have had I would imagine it takes us a bit longer to heal than normal in the short term. I had a picc line in my arm and the hole has only now started to disappear at just over 3 months post. Xx

  • Congratulations on finishing treatment! I have personally found that my dry lips are because my mouth is also very dry. I use Dove nourishing lip care, drink plenty of water and even rinse my mouth with water after eating. I also have salivix dry mouth pastilles to help. I also use vaseline intensive care essential healing (this fragrance free one) around my lips before bed and when I wake up. Hopefully you'll be on your way to healing in no time Slight smile Best of luck!

Because I am a lip balm addict I have treated myself and order some Nudestix - the reviews are amazing and I just couldn't resist it!

  • Hope you like it. X

  • Hi Clarhedge,

I had very sore cracked lips after 3 weeks of treatment and used Pawpaw balm.  I still use it every day now to keep my lips from drying and cracking as I work a lot outside. You can buy it in Boots or online and it’s really good for all sorts of sore areas.
