Losing weight post treatment

I needed to lose weight before I was diagnosed with cancer and didn’t lose anything at all during treatment. I’m now a month after treatment and wanted to ask has anyone been given dieting advice during this time? I don’t want to restrict calories if that has a negative effect on my recovery but I’m also concerned that being very overweight is not healthy and can cause lots of other issues. I’m eating a very healthy diet but just not sure where to pitch my calorie allowance. Being in my late 50s means I won’t lose anything unless I go down to about 1400 calories.

When I try to look up anything online it is mostly about people trying to keep their weight high enough!!

  • Hi Heather09

I'm not an expert but I wouldn't have thought 1400 calories is sustainable long term. Have you calculated how many calories you were consuming and then maybe just reduce that by a little bit. I would base your meals around good quality protein and make sure you get plenty of veg along with healthy fats and slow release carbs. Also I don't know how active you are but try and increase that. Like you say you need to eat enough to heal, protein will help with this as it helps your body repair. Xx

  • Hello

My advice here is not to count calories - check out instead the Glucose Goddess - she has just had two programs on ITVX where she shares her ten hacks for healthy eating - and it's all very sensible and no counting calories!! Here's a link to her website: search.app/vJKVXCPWmWJkACxG7

She focuses on helping people to reduce their addiction to sugar (not just through the sweet stuff) and eat more nutritionally - and without reducing calories, people lose weight and feel better.  You can download her ten hacks for free as well as watch her TV program - and that's also why I love her so much - as yes whilst she is a punished author - she's committed to help improve people's health.....

Let me know what you think and good luck.

  • Hello Heather09

I was never given any dietary advice and because chemo played havoc with my taste buds I only ate 'food' with very strong flavours.  I am still very partial to a large bag of heavily flavoured crisps because they just hit the spot!

But that is no help to you, and well done if you are eating healthily already.  MrsBadass has highlighted the possible addiction to sugar, both my daughters have cut carbs (which apparently convert to sugar, I didn't know!) and have managed to lose weight.  I am old school and used to count calories and anything that means you don't have to do that gets a big plus from me.

Best of luck and sorry I can't be of more help.

    Irene xx

  • Hi Heather,

Great that you month post treatment and really hope that the side effects are improving.

It sounds like a very low calorie allowance and I can only echo what others have said in response. Focus on proteins and a balanced diet and try to avoid sugar if you can. Trying to restrict too much and focusing on calories can backfire by leaving you feeling hungry and in these early stages of recovery you don’t want to set up too challenging a regime. Sounds like the wise souls on this forum have given some great guidance so wishing you the very best for this part of your journey x

  • Thanks everyone! I’ve thrown the tracker away for now and will focus on eating lots of proteins!

  • Hi Heather,

Wishing you well for the dietary changes and hope that it isn’t too daunting for you at the moment.
You have been through a lot and of course are still going through it so please be kind to yourself and don’t make it any harder than it needs to be.
Good that you have ditched the tracker.

Very best of luck with your goals xx

  • Hey

Checking-in and wanted to see how you are getting on?

  • I’ve not really lost any weight but I’ve been concentrating on eating really healthy stuff, focusing on protein and good fat. My family had a go at me too for calories restricting so I’ve stopped counting. I’m seeing the oncologist next week so I’m going to ask about the best way to lose weight safely! I’ve managed to get sciatica too so can’t exercise as much as I’d like!! My exhaustion is really bad too so it’s a bit of a tough week for me! I’m sure it’ll improve soon hopefully Fingers crossed
