Hi, I had treatment for stage 3B anal cancer 14 years ago and, although I didn't realise it at the time have had all the symptoms of proctitis ever since - living a normal life because of daily immodium tablets.

Now it seems I have anamea and a stool test shows bleeding from the digestive track. I am waiting to have a colonoscopy to find out the cause but just wondered if anyone on here has suffered from radiation proctitis and if this could be the cause of the bleeding? (I know it can but I don't know how common it is). Thanks

  • Hi Janno, I'm sorry you are dealing with anemia, but thankful you are getting tested. Yes I developed radiation proctitis two years after treatment in 2014. I experienced symptoms of bleeding, pain during bowel movements and vomiting. I also experienced bowel incontinence and was also diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2021.

I had pelvic radiation which was all that was offered in 2012 and I believe this was a contributing factor in my case. I was also  hospitalized with severe burns and required blood transfusions in my 5th week of treatment delaying my treatment a week.

I now am on Skyrizi for my ulcerative colitis which has affected my entire colon. My radiation proctitis is still active as well.

Please keep us posted on the finding of your  colonoscopy.

    Best wishes to you!!

  • Hello Janno

I am three years out of treatment and although I have side effects I haven't experienced what you are going through.  I am relieved that they are investigating further, please let us know how you get on.

  • Thank you. I absolutely will. I'll also share the symptoms once I know for sure that it's rp. I feel people should be aware of so that they can look out for them however many years later.

  • Thanks Irene, I will. Hope you are doing well.
