Severe hip pain

Hello all

I have read on here that quite a few of you have suffered from post radiotherapy hip pain , I'm struggling to walk it's so painful,  GP prescribed codeine which either knocks me out or upsets my already upset bowels, I did ask if he'd give me a cortisone injection locally but said don't do on NHS for hip pain Cry Any tips please? I have my 2nd checking mri scan Monday and oncologist has requested bone windows (not sure what that means) I won't get results until 14th January as that's my appointment with her . I am missing being active and walking but it's so difficult to out any pressure on my right leg . This is something I have never experienced before and have to admit it's getting to me more than the 6 weeks treatment did.

Thanks for listening

  • Hi Minty, that sounds really painful. Maybe you should talk to someone at the hospital rather than GP, they are more specialised and sometimes can prescribe things GPs can't/won't because of their budgets.

I just found that as far as our cancer is concerned GPs don't know that much - it is quite rare, I suppose so they don't see too many cases. Either mention to hosp next time you are there, or ring them up and explain if you are really suffering. I never had to ring but the radiotherapists were very open to people calling if they needed help.

  • Hi Minty ,

I was told last week , the radiotherapy has caused insufficient fractures in my bones and to be aware of hip pain .. I’m hoping to get back swimming or gym but not sure what this all means … I hope you get some relief soon , maybe contact your colorectal team ?
    take care

  • Thank you,  I  agree think gp is nervous to treat while still under the oncology team . I will ring them on Monday,

  • Thanks Chrissie

I will have another word with the team , although cancervnurse told me to ring GP 2 weeks ago for pain relief.

Hugs right back to you too Hugging

  • Hello Minty

I feel for you, I really do.  I don't struggle to walk but I really seize up when I sit for long periods.  And my legs are like lead when I am climbing stairs.  I don't know what your oncologist means either, but I have been referred for a DEXA scan in January to check bone density.  I was also referred for physiotherapy and the physiotherapist suggested it might be my age - I think he took one look at my face and back-tracked hastily!  I could hike 10 - 15 miles no problem prior to treatment and my limit is now 2 - 3 miles walking my dog, and then I have to rest to recover.

I will be really interested to hear how you get on, and hope you get some answers and proper pain relief.

    Irene xx

  • Thanks Irene,  not easy when you can't do something you love  doing , I miss my daily 4 mile walks at the moment,  it certainly makes a difference if you can get out  in the fresh air .

I will post once I have any answers

  • Hi Minty, I am really interested to see how you get on.  I am into day 26 of radiation and I started experiencing right hip pain approx about day 18.  When I told my radiologist of my pain he checked my hip out by rotating my right leg in different positions and said it was not causing major pain.  I have been prescribed antiflammation medication for this now and when I don't take it my hip is very tender and sore.
