Hi folks ,

another bowel problem post but this time 5 months after chemoradiotherapy … my cancer team just saying it’s normal to have these problems but not really offering much help ..

Today I was looking after my young grandson , had a normal bowel movement but 3 hours later the intestine pain , wind producing uncontrollable mucus but not diarrhoea !!! I have kept the food diary but these weekly episodes don’t follow a pattern , as more or less eating the same low fibre diet …

I’ve come back home to my hot water bottle but anxiety kicking in big time , as scans in 2 weeks .. I take Imodium when it’s diarrhoea but not sure what to take with this mucus explosion and tummy ache

any advice or reassurance would be grateful

take care

  • Oh Chrissie

I wish we could help ease the gnawing anxiety in others but I don't think anyone has the solution, a cancer diagnosis has left such a mark on all of us there are always unwelcome thoughts creeping and especially around scan time.  I am two and a half years out and still get all these strange new aches and pains prior to a scan and am always shocked when they tell me everything is clear.  At five months out I didn't get pain but had explosive mucus every day and especially in the mornings.  I can't remember exactly when it eased off, but it did and life settled down to a new normal.

As it is two weeks isn't too long to wait for your scans but If your tummy ache is ongoing you could ring the treating team and see if they will bring your appointment forward.

Please come back and let us know how you are.

    Big hug

  • Hey Chrissie - just to pick up on low fibre diet? I was told to stick to that and then told not to and to be honest introducing veggies etc has made a big change in terms of tummy pain and loo visits.  I still take senna as terrified of constipation - get 2 litres of water in a day and it’s going ok ish! X

The tummy pain is the alarm for us after our treatment and you must chase for more help other than it’s normal.
During treatment our teams were great but I really feel the continuing support has been slack or, most likely they just don’t have time to support. I was worried about upping fruit and veg but it’s been fine and less painful tummy sessions x

  • Thanks Angie , I feel I may have a bowel infection , so being triaged on Tuesday at the hospital … the pain has been really bad this weekend and I’m hanging in there with my anxiety , not helped by family visiting from London and wanting to do things  with them …. !!!
Good days , not so good ..

    take care

  • Thanks Irene ,

I rang my care team and someone is phoning tomorrow and hopefully a triage app at the hospital tues .. this weekend has been more intense than normal , so thinking there could be inflammation somewhere … ?
been reading up on radiation enteritis etc but will leave it to the hospital now …  I have taken Imodium but unfortunately my appetite gone completely …

take care , hope all good with you ?
