Hi all - has anyone had a successful claim on critical illness insurance for AC? My policy states the following (see below) but does not list SCC as being covered - i'm worried that they may say it is skin cancer. Does anyone have any experience in this - or had a successful claim?

It is Legal and General.

Thank you in advance

Any malignant tumour positively diagnosed with histological confirmation and characterised by the uncontrolled growth of malignant cells and invasion of tissue. The term malignant tumour includes leukaemia, sarcoma, pseudomyxoma peritonei, merkel cell cancer and lymphoma except cutaneous lymphoma (lymphoma confined to the skin).

For the above definition, the following are not covered:

  • All cancers which are histologically classified as any of the following:
    • pre-malignant;
    • non-invasive;
    • cancer in situ;
    • having either borderline malignancy; or
    • having low malignant potential.
  • All tumours of the prostate unless histologically classified as having a Gleason score of 7 or above or having progressed to at least clinical TNM classification T2bN0M0. ·
  • Malignant melanoma unless it has been histologically classified as having caused invasion beyond the epidermis (outer layer of skin). ·
  • Any other skin cancer (including cutaneous lymphoma) unless it has been histologically classified as having caused invasion in the lymph glands or spread to distant organs.
  • I should add mine luckily has not spread to lymph nodes and is classified as T1N0MO

  • Hi

    II hope you don’t mind me commenting, because I didn’t have critical illness cover myself, but my thinking is that you need to look at this slightly differently.

    You don’t have skin cancer, you have anal cancer which is squamous cell which means it originated in the cells of the anus. Lots of cancers originate in these types of cells, but they are not called skin cancer. “Squamous cell” is a description of the type of anal cancer you have, just as it could be a description for example of cervical cancer.

    Anal cancer would satisfy the company description of “malignant tumour, and uncontrollable growth of malignant cells and invasion of tissue”. For me, I had no spread to lymphnodes or metastasis, but I did have a malignant tumour, with spread to the tissue around my cervix. I would therefore have expected the company to pay out if I had a critical illness policy.

    Ultimately, you would need to call Legal and General to confirm you can claim, and I hope it’s successful for you.

    I don't have any helpful advice to offer but I see that Sarah has given some good advice, I really hope that your claim is successful.

  • Thank you. I hope you are recovering now. I don’t think of it as skin cancer but just the chance that L&G might write it off as skin cancer -  I would appeal against it. It’s not a huge payout but would pay off some debts.

    i agree I need to see what they say - my consultant has replied to their request for information so I need to wait until it has been assessed. I’m an overthinker!

  • Thank you Irene a hope all ok with you

  • Hello, I have had a successful claim yes. I was insured with Aviva. They did ask for a lot of my medical history but I have Crohn’s disease which caused a bit of a brief delay. However they did pay out eventually. I would certainly pursue the claim if I was you as it is not really a ‘normal’ skin cancer is it!

  • Thanks for the reply. I agree it’s definitely not a normal skin cancer! Hope all good with you now.
