Hi all, just wanted to write this in case anyone is facing APR surgery or has recently gone through it and now recovering.
I had APR surgery for anal cancer on 27th July 2023. It’s now 2nd Jan and I have just ticked off my first day back at work. I was hoping to go back in November originally (I don’t know why but that seemed the best idea when I first went off!) but my body had other ideas and my wound on my bum dehisced and took nearly six months to heal in the end. I won’t lie - it has been literally a pain in the arse to get this far. However it CAN be done. Having the surgery is stressful for you, difficult for your family and may seem like the last resort but I promise it is doable. Having a stoma takes some getting used to but it’s doable. There might be complications like I have had but it’s doable and hopefully you can come out the other side and be OK.
I’m nervous about an upcoming scan but I am proud of myself for getting through a major major surgery and coming out the other side.
Happy New Year to you all and please get in touch with me if you ever have any queries about this surgery, I found threads like this very useful after my diagnosis.

Hello Weekend Walker
I had my APR surgery in February this year at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield. My consultant colorectal surgeon was Mr Paul Skinner and my consultant plastic surgeon was Miss V Giblin.
I hope you’re ok, I remember how scary this waiting part was - exactly a year ago and over Christmas!
If you want to know anything else, feel free to message.
Wishing you all the best for the CT and EUA and then whatever they decide.
Claire xx
Hi Claire I think if I have the surgery it will be Mr Skinner illkeep you informed .it's good to talk to someone else who had had it with the dame surgeon xx
Hi Claire how long was your recovery .thanks xx
Hi, I won’t lie, it’s been a long slog. I was in bed for about 9 weeks and it took ages for me to heal externally, although I think I was missed by the NGH wound clinic. Once I got seen there, I started to heal much quicker.
It took me ages to be able to sit and I still find it uncomfortable but it’s improving all the time. There must be a lot of healing to do internally.
I went back to work on a phased return in August and still strugge with fatigue and moderate pain but feel like I’m able to live my life again - going for meals, seeing friends, I can walk the dogs for miles
I saw Miss Giblin a few weeks ago and she was happy with my progress so I don’t feel I’m behind.
I found it hard finding accounts of people that had been through the same so please keep asking if you need to xx
Hi Claire I hope you don't mind me bothering you.ive not heard about my EUA yet were you waiting a long time to hear ? and also how longwdre you waiting to get a date foe your surgery it's really making me anxious .I've rung the appointments co ordinator but she's off till Monday hope your doing well .Thanks xx
I had my surgery(a different one) where Mr Skinner was one of three surgeons involved at the Royal Hallamshire. My lead surgeon specifically wanted him as one of the team-she said she wanted the best team possible and I believe that’s what I got, so I think you would be in good hands. He made a lovely job of his part of the surgery creating my colostomy!
Sarah xx
Of course I don’t mind and you’re not bothering me at all.
I had my EUA because they thought it was just scarring that was showing on my 6 month scans but they wanted to be sure (thank god they checked!) so I think I had the EUA in November and that confirmed that there was still something there so had to have more scans in December. I didn’t find out the exact extent of my surgery until Jan and then had to wait until the end of Feb for my surgery.
I can’t remember when I got the date but i remember feeling very anxious, like you. It’s not nice waiting and seems to take an age but I found the appointments lady to be really helpful so try her again on Monday and see if you can get anywhere.
Go easy on yourself and ask anything else as it comes to you x
Hi Clare thanks for that .I will ring on Monday and keep pestering it's a long waiting game xx
