Secondary cancer

After finishing treatment for Anal cancer 16months ago, and getting good scan results, today my GP phoned and said my recent blood tests showed my liver function was abnormal! He said it was probably a gall stone but when pushed about the possibility of secondary liver cancer, he replied that was why I had to have an urgent MRI! Foolishly I went on to Dr Google and after reading articles on there, I'm in a complete panic! I'm convinced I have liver cancer, apperently most people who have had anal cancer DO go on to get liver cancer! No one has ever mentioned this to me, my head is in a spin! I was looking forward to going on holiday in a couple of weeks but what with my husband just getting over an eye operation, me being told I have to have a hip replacement operation, train strikes and now this, I'm thinking I shouldn't bother!

  • Phew Moira!!!! (), when I saw you’d commented again on this thread my heart was in my mouth!! So, so pleased that your results were good (apart from the hall bladder of course!). I bet the relief was immense when you received the news. Onwards & upwards, over the moon for you. It doesn’t quite seem right to say enjoy your time in London considering the circumstances but I’m sure you understand what I mean.

  • What wonderful news Moira!  My mother had her gallbladder removed by keyhole surgery when she was nearly 90, and it really was straightforward.  She was back to eating normal food whilst still in hospital after having severe gallbladder pain for years.  I don't reckon much to Dr Google at all, he has no bedside manner and is getting a bit confused; he is full of outdated theories and remedies and has listened too much to the quacks he keeps company with...!

  • Hi

Sorry to hear your liver is playing up. Just to let you know I had liver problems at one point too. They called it a “deranged liver” basically it was objecting to everything and I had very high levels of everything for ages. I was seen by a liver specialist had an ultrasounds and various scans. It was all fine. No secondary mets so try not to panic (much easier said than done! I’m a year out and just got the all clear but have had a month of worrying about brain mets which has turned out to just be inner ear problem affecting my balance! It is definitely not true that “we all go on to get liver cancer” in fact those of us where treatment works can go in to live a completely normal and healthy life not shortened at all!

It is so difficult to get back to trusting our bodies after what we have been through. Everything seems to have that “what if…” and our GPS (quite rightly) ensure we are quickly checked as we can’t be too careful.

Im also an avid googler (aren’t we all!) it’s difficult not to be but deep breath and remember it can also be something completely different and sometimes nothing at all. There is a lot of misinformation out there so be careful to take it all with a pinch of salt and await the proper tests. Your doctors will make thorough checks.

    keeping all crossed for you

  • Thank you so much for your lovely, reassuring reply! Thank goodness my tests have come back to show the cancer hasn't spread to the liver but what a worrying few weeks I've had! The relief of knowing it's gall stones and a mysterious widened bile duct is immense! Even the thought of an operation to remove it doesn't bother me!

You're so right about us learning to trust our bodies again! Thank God we've got or fantastic GPs to keep a close eye on everything! I'm at the stage though that I'm afraid to go to the Podiatrist to get my toe nails cut, incase they find something! I think I'm going slightly mad!

    Thank you again, so much,

  • Deranged Liver should either be the name of a rock band, or the title of a cancer memoir…I kinda love it. (But mostly, I love that all turned out fine for you!)

  • Moira!

Yay! I’m SO THRILLED to read that your scan was clear of cancer.  That’s honestly just so wonderful.  You can totally handle gall bladder removal.  Mine was removed when the surgeon did my liver resection, as its proximity to the liver where he was cutting left the possibility of a (fatal) bile leak, so my gall bladder was fine, but is now gone, nonetheless.  I noticed that digestion was a little wonky for a few months (which may have been attributable to other factors not related to the gall bladder removal), but now things seem normal again.  I’ll hope for the same for you!

I have found that in medical/dental appointments since the cancer diagnosis, I am now of the attitude “as long as it’s not cancer, I’m happy for whatever you’re going to tell me.”  I guess what I’m saying is “gall bladder surgery…you’ve totally got this.”

    Safe travels to you.

    • Ha ha! Yes you’re quite right!!! Probably a great title for my memoirs or the brand name for some wine Joy

  • Hi moira, please don’t panic until you have cause to.
the liver function can fluctuate for many reasons and your GP should have highlighted that rather than the opposite. Yes it’s great that they are doing an MRI rightly so but to scare you like that is unnecessary.

my liver function went through the roof at one point, they rang me to tel me I had severe liver damage. I was distraught.

tunrs out it was just a dodgy blood test - most likely not been sound correctly prior to testing or something.

yes this type along with most other cancers can spread to the liver, also the lungs, anywhere really but that doesn't mean it has.

just take a moment, breathe, enjoy your holiday and wait to hear.
maybe request a repeat blood test too, you never know, could come back normal. Shrug♀️

    best of luck xxx

  • I went to Dr. Google and was relieved. I based my decisions on 80-%85 survival. My fears had more to do with the effects of the treatment.
