Well i have survived my first two weeks of treatment - yippee!  Haven't felt too bad (so far!) a little nausea early morning so i have a slice of toast then take my first chemo tabs out of the way.  Feeling tired of course especially with the travelling to and from the hospital.

i have to rush to the loo a few times in the morning bowel wise and am suffering from a lot of bloating and embarrassing wind!!  in fact the wind caused a problem with my radiotherapy one day last week.  After setting everything up they came in and send they couldn't proceed as there was a pocket of wind so they told me to have a walk round and come back after the next patient!  So embarrassing but I must admit the walking round did release the wind they were right and then they could complete the treatment.  I was panicking it would happen again the next two days and kept my fingers crossed and luckily they didn't - phew!  Wondered if this had happened to anyone else?

  • I'm not suffering to much with soreness yet mainly a bit of stinging.  during this warm weather I am going without knickers in the house!  I have taken advice from the forum to use cream regularly and the one I was given is Diprobase from hospital.  I have also been given a vaginal dilator pack and told to start using this now twice a week - can imagine that getting a bit sore over the next few weeks.  I've bought a sitz bath and the epsom salts too and have started using.

So okay so far and so grateful for the advice I keep reading on this forum and will continue to read - thank you everyone.

  • Hi , that’s great to hear you’re 2 weeks down already & you seem to be coping really well. The fatigue was by far the biggest side effect for me, I just felt exhausted sometimes & would have take myself off for an hour or two nap to recharge usually when I got back from my hospital appointment & I’d still be ready for bed by 9pm!!

I didn’t suffer with too much wind or bloating during treatment but I sure as heck did for a quite long time after my treatment had finished. I now know there are some foods my digestive system just can’t cope with anymore. The issue you’re having right now is probably just your bowel becoming a little irritated by the radiotherapy but if it continues after your treatment is over & you’ve passed the couple of weeks post treatment stage then keeping a food diary is a great way to eliminate trigger foods. You could ask your treating team if it would be ok for you to take charcoal tablets for the wind issue, I find these work for me personally but as I said I would always check with your team first before taking anything new even a natural product such as charcoal.

It’s also great that you’ve found some of the tips given by our lovely members useful.

Good luck for week three, it’ll be over & done with before you know it.

  • Thanks Nicola,

I'll have a word with my nurse at my review tomorrow about the charcoal tablets. I do have a lots of fibre in my diet as i've suffered with IBS in the past due to stress. So i'll ask about my diet too - just don't want to get constipated! Stuck out tongue winking eye

  • Hi again Carole (),

When you speak to your nurse, if you haven’t already, mention about your IBS & ask if there’s a chance you could be prescribed some Movicol or the like just incase you do get any constipation, I always keep them on hand as I also have mild IBS that has become more apparent following treatment & it usually results in some constipation.

  • Hi as Nicola has said charcoal tablets can be helpful but please check with your nurse as they can prevent absorption of drugs if taken near to the time you take medication.  Gentle abdominal massage can help in moving trapped wind. You can do this yourself, just have a look online for some tips on the best techniques. I suspect you may feel too delicate down below  to use the vaginal dilators in a week or so but it's a good idea to use them as soon as you feel able. All the best with your treatment, it will be over and done with before you know it! Bev

  • Thanks Bev

Never thought of massage for wind and have soon found tips online - really makes sense to do this to solve it!
