Itching and worrying

Hi, so I'm getting myself into worry mode again! Just over two years post treatment, all well at scan in August.

Last couple of weeks I keep getting itching/tingling kind of sensations. They are really triggering me back to pre diagnosis as this happened a lot. I've spoken to the nurse who has sent me cream and some polymen but I'm still worrying myself stupid. Rationally I try and tell myself it's probably skin/nerve damage, but I am not very good at the rational stuff.

Anyone experienced anything similar?

I realised after I wrote this I posted something similar 11 months ago! Do you think still getting this, albeit on and off is the new normal?

  • Hi , I think this seems to be a quite normal long term side effect. I still get itching on/off and my internal anal skin is definitely not the same. It’s so sensitive, just had an Epsom salt bath as I’ve been itchy & sore today. It’s very annoying as it does set you off thinking doesn’t it. Epsom salts  seem to work. I always buy them from Home Bargain as they’re a reasonable price in there. Bev x

  • Hi Deb (),

If it’s any comfort I also get intermittent itching. At over 3 1/2 years post treatment these episodes are less that they once were but I still mention everything at my check-ups. The area we’ve had radiated is packed full of nerves so I suppose the nerve damage from the treatment is huge therefore I suspect the tingling sensation is most likely nerve related & I was also told the radiation effected skin would never return to anything close to what it once was & will always be super sensitive & pretty delicate. I can still only wash the area with aqueous cream, anything else, even the most gentlest of cleansing products seem too drying & cause irritation. These things tend to send us down a rabbit hole of what ifs don’t they? If you’re not due a check- up anytime soon I’m sure they wouldn’t mind if you gave someone from your treating team a call just to put your mind 100% at rest.

    Hope that helps a little.
