Upsetting MRI - scared

I'm struggling a bit this morning after just reviewing results of my MRI last week that show my tumor has grown and there's involvement of one lymph node. This was after a Pet scan less than 2 weeks ago that showed a significantly smaller mass and no node spread. I'm supposed to start treatment Aug 3, but now I really wish I were starting this week instead. I feel like a ticking time bomb, and while I'm trying not to overreact I'm scared. To top it all off, this Thursday is my birthday and my adult kids were coming to stay with us for a few days. Now I feel like I'll be too nervous to be around anyone, and just want to start this damn treatment ASAP. Trying not to panic, but of course it's the weekend so probably won't hear from my doctors until Monday. Any words of encouragement for a nervous patient that is trying to get through this waiting game? Thanks.

  • Hi

Im so sorry you have this news..weekends are especially long and painful when you need answers..

Can you speak to the oncologist on Monday morning so they can try to help with your fears..

You are in that in-between phase when you know you have AC.. but you dont know the full plan..

Hopefully on Monday your doctor or the colerectal team can give you some answers to allow you to process the treatment plan and journey.. its the not knowing that causes so much anxiety..

I know its easier said than done to try not to worry and to try to enjoy your birthday with your loved ones..have a glass of bubbles ..

We are all here for you through this journey so never ferl like you are alone..

    Im sending big hugs

    Please keep us posted..

  • Thank you Squeak for your kind words. You're right that the wait is the worst part. I will try to keep a positive outlook and hope that nothing significant has changed with my treatment and prognosis. I wish there were a way to speed up time so that the treatment were underway already! I'm sure that's a familiar feeling for so many of us with cancer. Of course we all want the cancer GONE and to move on with our lives. But of course there's nothing to be done except keep moving forward. Thanks again.

  • Hi  ,

I'm so sorry that you’re struggling with this new news. I really feel for you.

has given you some really great advice which I would like to echo.

Your oncologist/colorectal team will be the best people to speak with about this, I really hope they can offer you some reassurance.

I know it probably feels like the last thing you want to be doing, entertaining family & celebrating while you’re on this emotional rollercoaster but you may find it’s just what you need right now.

Sending lots of healing thoughts your way & remember we’re here to help support you however we can.

  • Hello

I really do feel for you; the days and weeks are so long prior to treatment starting and feeling like a ticking time bomb is a very apt description.  Hopefully your family will be well aware of just how worried you are and look after you; you may well find that time with them all will really distract you and the 3rd August will come really quickly.

I hope you get some reassurance today when you speak to your doctors.  We are all thinking of you, please stay in touch.

    Big hug

    Irene xx

  • Thanks so much Irene. I spoke with my oncologist yesterday, who does not think the discrepancy in size or the one lymph node is too concerning. Evidently it is not uncommon for pet scans to underestimate tumor size and MRIs to overestimate them. Also, she thought the fact that the node didn't light up on the pet scan was a good sign and that the radiotherapy will be treatiing this area anyway. I'm just going to stay positive and look forward to starting next Monday. My kids were here last night, and they were so supportive and a good distraction. I'm lucky for that!
