Hello everyone,

I finally finished the 6 cycles of Carboplatin/Paclitaxel on May 19th - bit of a slog, but overall not too bad and with no delays to treatment throughout. I tolerated the treatment very well with no adverse effects (apart from the extravasation in December that was treated promptly). Six weeks on, I'm feeling so much better than I have done for many months.

We were able to get away to Spain by ferry 10 days later, but the oncologist wanted a blood test before travel to check if anything was needed. Fortunately, no action was needed although neutrophils were low at 0.9 and Hb at 100 (which explained some breathlessness at the time).

The trip went smoothly without any issues and I was relieved to find that travelling with a stoma (albeit not flying, but ferry and driving) was more straightforward than I anticipated. However, due to the fistula (which led to Paloma's creation), I didn't go swimming or cycling to minimise any infection risk as it is still 'active'. A few days into the trip, I felt 'tender' in that area and in some discomfort. Then I noticed 'debris' emerging from the fistula, which reminded me of what I saw during the sigmoidoscopy last August (an angry-looking solitary rectal ulcer that led to my diagnosis). It had a hard edge the colour of the end of a fingernail with a blueish/grey area underneath it and about half the size of a little fingernail. Using a magnifying mirror, I could see the pink tunnel - quite weird!

Once the material had come out, the mucus I'd been experiencing over the last 8 months or so completely stopped, and I felt a lot more comfortable. I can only think that the material was the remnants from the tumour perhaps?

So far, so good and my head hair is growing back and thickening up, plus eyelashes and eyebrows, etc are coming back. Leg hair has also returned! I had the 6 month CT scan and MRI scans of liver and pelvis on June 24. Next meeting with the oncologist is on Thursday to get the results.

So, fingers crossed and I'm hoping for the best given I was Stage 4 at diagnosis T4 N1 M1 with one met to the liver. At the 3 month scan, the one liver lesion had reduced slightly in size (down to 25mm) with no evidence of new disease and no news then on the size of the anal tumour. As some of the tumour was external, I think it has reduced in size but difficult to tell internally as the stoma bypassed that route.

I'll let you know what the next steps are after Thursday.

  • Hello

I am delighted to hear that you managed to get away, that must have been wonderful after all those months of treatment.  And so good to hear that you are feeling so well too.  I also found the six months of carboplatin/paclitaxol not too bad.  Coincidentally I was looking at photographs this morning and there is one of me at Wimbledon with my lovely son-in-law who took me as a treat to celebrate the end of treatment.  My hair was just coming back and I had to spray sunscreen on my head!

That is really interesting about the debris; whatever it was it sounds as if it has eliminated some of your symptoms.  One side effect of chemo is that normal healing is really affected so this break from treatment will kick-start the normal processes.

I will be thinking of you on Thursday and am keeping everything crossed that you have excellent results and a good plan moving forward.

    Big hug

  • Hi  , well done for completing your chemo & like Irene I’m delighted that you were able to get away on holiday, it must have felt amazing.

I’ve everything crossed for your oncology appointment on Thursday, I hope it brings you nothing but good news & a plan can be put in place moving forward.

    Take care.

  • Hello Kathy

Good to hear you got through the chemo.

Wishing you the very best results on Thursday and keep us updated about the next steps.

  • Thank you Irene,

The break was certainly welcomed by both of us! I did all the driving and it was lovely to chill by the pool and benefit from the sunshine (albeit safely). Scampering up and down ferry decks is certainly good exercise.

I'll question the oncologist closely re the debris and what they can see on the scans about the fistula, as I know it's quite a rare thing. Since the debris episode everything has been quiet, so we'll see what they say.

Thank you again for all your support, and I hope all is well with you.

  • Thanks Nikki,

It was a great relief to get away and ferry travel is a relaxing way to do it. We'd planned shorter stops en route, which worked very well.

Just looking forward to getting the results now and what lies ahead. Hope you're doing OK too.

  • Hello Ally,

Thank you and hope you're OK. Yes, I'll post an update afterwards.

  • Like yourself Kathy chemo tolerated very well and the port has made such a difference.

Just waiting for PET scan results. The CT results were very positive regarding the spread and I feel physically and mentally ready for the next stage, lots of gardening and fresh air have really helped.

So pleased you got to have a holiday at the end of treatment, a normal life in-between treatment really boosts the spirits.

    Everything crossed for you.

  • Thank you Ally,

Good to hear your CT results were very positive and wishing you all the best with your PET scan ones. Fingers crossed for you.

Gardening, fresh air and sunshine are all so beneficial for your health, although this heat can get challenging at times.
