Anal Cancer

Hi, like you all, don’t really want to be here, but great to be able to share fears and support others. I was first referred to hospital in March after like so many other people being treated for piles. Consultant I saw,  after examining me, sent me for Colonoscopy, CT and and MRI scans. Had colonoscopy beginning of April and was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, biopsies came back and I had  Squamous cell carcinoma, anal cancer with a couple of enlarged lymph nodes in same area. I was then referred to a different Consultant and had to go for a Pet CT scan. I am now waiting to see Consultant next week at different hospital, hoping Pet CT scan shows the same, or maybe better, you can always hope ! Just hope treatment begins soon, as a lot of you have said, the waiting is the worst!

  • After you have seen oncologist at hospital, what are the next steps? Will they ask for more scans before arranging treatment plan ? Thanks

  • Hi  ,

I’ve just replied to your post on another thread offering a warm welcome, I’m sorry you’ve had the need to find us.

Hopefully your oncologist will have all the information needed already to discuss a treatment plan with you when you see them next week, you’ve had an MRI, CT & PET scan so fingers crossed you’ll need no more to decide on a treatment plan.

If the plan is for chemoradiotherapy then you’ll need one more scan (planning scan) where all measurements will be taken for the physicists to plan your radiotherapy, it’s a very exact science. At this appointment you’ll probably be given some little dot tattoos, mine are on the front of my hips & pubic bone, these are so that the radiologists can line you up quickly & precisely each day for your treatment.

I hope your appointment goes well.

  • Thank you Nicola, my mind is working overtime tonight xx

  • The way you’re feeling is completely normal. It’s a tense time, almost like you’re in no man’s land isn’t it? Hopefully once you’ve a treatment plan & get started you’ll feel a little more in control again.

    Nicola

  • Thank you Nicola, you are so right! No man’s land ! x

  • Hi  Welcome to the forum. Nicola has given you some good information so I won't repeat. You are at that horrible waiting stage, try and keep busy with things you enjoy and remember the treatment is highly successful. Sending hugs. Xx

  • Thank you for your kind words xxx

  • Hello

All this collecting of information, scans and whirlwind of appointments is like some sort of rollercoaster with no end.  But it has, you will get there although it mightn't seem like it right now.  As all your scans are recent that should be the end of them and you really will feel better and more in control once you have your treatment plan in place.

Good luck for your appointment next week, your treatment should start 2 - 3 weeks after that.

And we are here to virtually hold your hand, we have all been there.

    Big hug

    Irene xx

  • Aw Irene, thank you so much, so kind xx
