Hi Everyone

Its been a while since I posted. I've not been great mentally, as well as physically, but I have managed to find the support I was needing and I'm starting to feel better about things.

I had my first review yesterday, 5.5 weeks post treatment. The consultant couldn't feel the tumour which I know is good news but I'll feel better about it all when I have my first scan results. Cautiously hopeful.

I am still having issues with my bowels, sporadically three or four times daily and they have become very painful again in the last week. Still using my sitz bath and my skin has broken again in the buttock cleft, the tiniest bit but hella stingy lol! DRE was painful but thats the inflammation so was to be expected.

I have now connected with a wonderful GP at my surgery who wants to manage my symptoms and provide face to face support as much as possible. This has been a great development and we are currently trying different meds to get my nervous system a bit more sorted. In truth I've had an erratic nervous system for many years and I'm not sure if its dialled up with the whole cancer journey or its side effects from the treatment but I guess time will tell going forward. Buzzy hands, feet and tinnitus seems louder. I feel I need my head speed to match my physical speed as that's what I find most frustrating, I was so active before cancer now I'm 1.5 stone heavier and knackered lol!

My hand is still bad with the infusion site, scab still in place 9/10 weeks later so I've been referred to dermatology and I've also got a dexa scan next week.

I've had a good chat with a Macmillan nurse today, my gp cancer care coordinator is really nice and I have her support too which after the whirlwind of diagnosis and quickly followed up treatment is making me feel more grounded.

Its been quite the journey so far ....... negative days. positive days. flat days. but I'm still here Upside down

  • It’s good to hear from you   although I’m sorry you’ve been struggling both mentally and physically.

I think following treatment we all crave that feeling of normality & in that lose the enormity of what we’ve actually been through, we’ve been fed 2 immensely toxic treatments in the quest to rid us of this disease & they really do take some recovering from & that’s aside from the emotional battering you take from diagnosis & beyond.

It’s so good to read that you’ve got amazing support from a great GP too, this is so important. You sound as though you’ve an incredible support network of professionals around you, make good use of them all.

  • Hi  sorry youve been having a rough time but its good you are now getting the support you need. It is still very early days so be kind to yourself. Sending hugs. Xx

  • Hello

The first two or three months after treatment can be really hard; often we can look back to normal but we are not in the least; either physically or mentally.  There are all the problems that can come in the early days after treatment whilst our bodies recover, the new 'normal' for most of us that we have to come to terms with, the bereavement of losing our old fit selves, the process of coping with it all and the ever-present fear.  And all the while you may have friends and family saying you look SO well!

So I am really sorry that you have been struggling but it sounds as if you have a really good support system around you and so hope that things only get better from now on.  As Bungle says it is still really early days.  I remember telling another forum member that it was at least three months before I felt slightly more in control of my bowels and an actual bowel movement felt less like passing broken glass.

Believe me, one day you will look back and think did I really go through that?  In the meantime, hang on in there; I know you have overcome so much in your life already, you have just chalked up another.  Well done you!

    Big hug

  • Hello Becky,

Im sorry to hear that you’re struggling. You are in such early days post treatment and don’t think that’s unusual. Your body is only just starting to recover and I do think it’s in the period just after treatment where the psychological impact really hits hardest. A bit like’ getting out of the burning building’ then feeling slightly stunned by it all.

For many of us it really does take quite a while for the bowels to calm down and the inflammation to settle.

It’s wonderful that you have connected with such a good gp and hopefully that will help. It’s good that they will keep an overview on all of your symptoms.

I know that I felt nowhere near normal at the point you are at . Please don’t be too hard on yourself and allow yourself time to heal. Hopefully there will be more of the good days soon for you.

    Healing hug to you xx
