Am I being unreasonable, I have lost faith in my treating hospital. After 10 months and 3 scans and being told nothing wrong I finally had a PET scan which identified a tumour, spread to lymph nodes and blood vessel.
what I am struggling to understand is how 2 MRIs and a CT scan failed to identify the tumour.
After 5 weeks of chemo and radiotherapy I now struggle to have trust in any scan results.
Hello Verbena in Spinney,
I am so sorry to hear of your experience and scan results. After being told you were doing well after previous scans , that must be absolutely devastating. It obviously shouldn’t be up to you to insist on scrutiny of your scans. We all take that as a given so it’s worrying to hear of both your and Sue M’s experience.
I hope that you’re doing as well as possible after the recent chemo, and that you too get some answers.
Wishing you all the best for your upcoming scan. X
I’m so sorry this has happened to you Sue m & can completely sympathise with your frustration & the loss of trust you’re experiencing.
I was diagnosed via biopsy of a suspected internal ulcer which turned out to be a squamous cell carcinoma, I had a diagnostic MRI & CT (I was never referred for. PET scan) which then went before a MDT, it was decided that I would be referred to a colorectal surgeon for a local resection with curative intent as my tumour could not be detected on either of those scans! When the pathology came back following the surgery there was a small area that only had a 1mm clear margin because my surgeon said if he’d gone any further there was a risk of permanent incontinence so I take from this that the tumour had begun to invade my muscle. I then had to wait 8 weeks to allow healing of the site before embarking upon a course of chemoradiotherapy.
Now I have to make clear that I have nothing but praise for my colorectal surgeon & oncologist but I have wondered if anything on those initial scans was missed & would I have been better going straight to chemoradiotherapy. I’m very thankful that after 7 years I’m still well & cancer free to my knowledge.
I completely agree with you for taking his further, it’s just not good enough that things like this are missed & that this then leads to later diagnosis requiring more aggressive treatments. I’m pleased your GP is on board with you too.
Nicola
I’m really sorry to learn of your experience too Verbena in Spinney ! How devastating for you to be lead to believe that the immunotherapy was working well only to be told 3 months later that this is not the case. I hope you’re doing ok with your chemo.
Sending a virtual hug.
Nicola
