Onion/ sulphur smelling discharge

Hello. As if it’s not horrendous enough (pain, swelling, chemo, radiation burns) I now have a watery discharge from my bum which stinks of onions. I mean. What fresh torture is this? I’m 3 months post treatment. Review in 10 days. I am fastidious with hygiene. Shower twice a day. Sitz baths etc.

I don’t eat onions so it’s not from my diet. I’m worried it’s an infection? Out of everything it feels like the Worst part of treatment. I’m embarrassed to be in company incase they smell it and it’s not me over thinking it. This is a strong smell. I’m changing pads throughout the day and wiping but still it persists.

Anyone else experience this? x

  • Hi Neuro72

I would get it checked if you think it's an infection. It could maybe be mucous I had an avalanche of that in the last week of my treatment but I don't recall it smelling of onions. Sending hugs. Xx

  • Hi neuro72,

Anal cancer is certainly the gift that just keeps giving.

This is clearly and understandably affecting you.

Do you have anything else going on such as a malaise or raised temperature?

I think Bungle1’s very good advice about getting yourself checked by a health professional is a very important suggestion. If you have an infection you need to get it checked and treated sooner rather than later.

If this turns out to be nothing more than a rubbish side effect, then maybe you can be given something to wash with or something to put in your underwear that might help you feel less self conscious.

If nothing else maybe your mind can be put at rest and you may get some indicator about how long this may last.

    Good luck and be well.

  • Thank you lovely. I’m in the middle of changing GPs at the minute but up at the oncologist next Monday so hopefully they can help x

  • Thank you lovely. I was like ‘what fresh hell is this’. Only it’s so not fresh. I’m changing GPs so need to try and book in. Unfortunately my GP has been avoiding me since diagnosis- 2 years of me saying something is wrong and giving me anusol and instillagel for pain. It took a locum to red flag me.

I'm also reducing morphine at the minute so I have pain break through - so feeling a bit rubbish anyway. No temp. It’s just another thing. I have a real thing about smell so psychologically brilliant that this is the latest Joy x

  • Hello Neuro72

This sounds so unpleasant for you, but often with these things you are the only one that is aware especially if you are a fastidious person in the first instance.  But these words don't help you if you are so aware.

If you really don't want to see your GP (and I can totally understand why) the good thing is you will be seeing your team in ten days and I would certainly flag it up with them.  If you don't want to wait that long can you give your new GP a ring?  As with the others I had copious amounts of mucous in the first few months after treatment but it didn't smell that I noticed. I am so sorry that you are still having pain to the extent that you are.  This is another thing to bring up with your reviewing team, and if you still have the mucous problem they might even do a swab on the day.

I do hope you get this sorted out.

    Irene xx

  • Honestly Irene the smell is bad. I did a survey. Joy

I think I’m going to have to see my GP - I have adjacent haemorrhoids to the tumour and not sure if it’s them or what’s going on xx

  • I just wanted to mention that this could be your tumour breaking down and being passed - it might be horrible but should not last forever. That said, I would def talk to medical staff just in case it is an infection.

  • This would be the best news x

  • Just following up on your post, Neuro72, I had a similar thing and was given this as a possible explanation. I know many of us do have horrible discharge following treatment so please be reassured that it will probably get much less and eventually stop. However, I have just been trying to find out a bit more and can't find anything to confirm the tumour breaking down and being passed in this way, so I would still check with your medical people.

Just don't assume anything on my sparse information, please.

    xx

  • Thank you lovely. I have my oncologist on Monday and they are so good at doing more if needed (bloods swabs etc) after the appointment so I’m hoping they can give me some reassurance/ direction/treatment if needed x
